I have a Lark IV that runs great. Last season toward rhen end it started slipping out of gear, haven't checked it yet to see if it's worn clutch dogs. When moving the shifter on the motor by hand, it stuck in forward gear and won't come out. Does the slipping out of gear sound like the clutch dogs? What would cause it to stick in gear? And where could i get parts if need be? Thanks

Welcome to Iboats, George.

When you say it's slipping out of gear, was the shift handle actually moving to the neutral position? Any associated clunks from the engine? What exact action do you take to get it back in gear?

Did you drain off any of the lower unit lube? Any signs of water intrusion, etc? There's no chance you're actually stuck in neutral I take it (which can normally happen without the engine or propeller turning a bit).

Sorry for the 20 questions, but I need to rule out a slipping prop hub.

Also, if it's convinient, could you post the model number from the nameplate between the two transom clamps, on top of the tilt/swivel bracket? Sometimes cowls get switched an I want to make sure of the year Lark we're working on here.

Re: Evinrude Lark IV

I will get numbers posted for this engine. When I say slipping, i mean at a higher rev it would make a "clunk" every couple seconds and could be stopped if you held the shifter forward. I read some posts that had suggested that could be worn clutch dogs or forward gear. The sticking forward happened recently. I was shifting it back and forth and it just stuck as if something inside possibly broke. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Could also be a loose connector on the shift rod. If one end pulls out of the connector, it can jam like that. Pull the little side cover and the inner cover if this still has the outer cover, and have a look.

If the rod has been partly out of the connector, it may not have been shifting fully into forward. It's easy to check, and worth the time.

Took off cover and found a loose bolt that held shifter arm in place to the motor. Not sure if this was loose and started the "clunk" noise? The number i saw on the block when i took off the cover was K307306. any help?

That loose bolt could be the entire problem. See if you can tighten it up. Put the shifter arm in the neutral position and make sure the lower unit is in neutral, then tighten the bolt. You can make more precise adjustments, if necessary, but that should do it.

Let us know what happens.

I haven't had a chance to see if that was my problem yet. Been real rainy here. Was wondering if there's any info online for the Lark IV at all. Thanks.

They will get "stuck" in gear sometimes when you're "dry" shifting Forward-Neutral-Reverse with the motor not running. That's normal. Turn the flywheel a little bit and it will "unstick".
