Evinrude and Johnson are both made by OMC, are they like Chevy and GMC? What year did they start using the same parts and I know they still make Evinrudes ,but I don't seem to see any new Johnsons, may I'm just not seeing them. What's the story here?

They still make both evins and johnsons...
Johnson
Evinrude

Usually the changes in the past between the two have been cosmetic or small, like different controllers and stuff.. the powerheads for equiv models were identical for the most part.. same with alot of other bits and pieces.. I recently picked up the tilt/trim from an old evinrude and bolted it to my johhny without problem, perfect fit.

As a test I bolted the push button control box from the rude to the johnny and it worked fine as well.. didn't like it as much though.

rgds

Frank

Many years the only difference is the color of the paint. Also some years totally different so need to know year. Last years 2000/2001 Evinrude make all the high tech engines, like 4 Strokes, finch fuel injection ect and Johnson make the plane carborated 2 strokes, but at the same time made every Evinrude dealer a Johnson dealer and vice versa. Both brands still exist but after being sold Bombardier is starting up very slowly and testing every design before sending to market. May be several years before make most of the old models.

For 2003 Bombardier will have the Evinrude FICHT line from 75 thru 250hp. Johnson will have a full 2 stroke line from 4 to 175hp and a 4 stroke line from 4 to 140hp. Evinrude and the Johnson 4 strokes will have 3 year warranties and the 2 strokes will be 2 years.

Johnson and Evinrude were the same basically until the '99 models when Evinrude became the hi-tech division.

Johnson & Evinrudes started using a lot of common parts in the early 1950s, beginning with the 25hp models, and eventually working its way through the whole line by 1954. Some exceptions to this rule would be the 5.5 and 10hp offered by Johnson some years in the 1950s, while Evinrude offered a 7.5 and 15hp. By 1956 they were pretty much the same top to bottom of the line, main differences being cosmetic.
- Scott
