Wondering if anyone had any ideas...I have a 1979 Evinrude (115 Horsepower). It has never had a buzzer go off, but the other day I took it out to test drive it, and when we shifted down (to slow down)a buzzer went off. It was up in the throttle control box... this buzzer went off and didnt stop. Then we put the boat in neutral, and it was still going off. We put it back in gear, and the buzzer stopped. So we made another run to see if it did it again. This time it went off but stopped as soon as we put the boat back in neutral. (again, it went off during downshifting). So once it went off we tried it one more time. This time it never went off... Any Ideas??

Re: Evinrude Issues

Hey folks (don't know who Geoff or Rebecca)....anyways...welcome to iboats.

The horn means overheat. Are ya' sure the eingine didn't overheat?

Or....being that the wires are in close proximaty (sp) with moving parts in the control box, you could have a frayed wire going to ground when shifting.

Next time out, and your sure the engine isn't overheating, if the buzzer goes off, look for the temp sensor on the head. It'll be a single tan wire going to a knife connector covered by a rubber boot. Pull the boot back and disconnect the knife connectors. If she keeps buzzing, ya' got horn problems or a short in the box.

Oh yeah.. and could it overheat.. then cool off (nothing changes.. still on the water.. and still running)
I am a diesel mechanic LOL not use to this boat stuff yet.
But what it does is the buzzer comes on... then goes off... then sometimes comes back on... then goes off. We cant seem to find any true pattern.. just that it happens when we begin pulling up on the throttle control.

Yep....you'll see what looks like a rubber stopper that the wire runs into.

EDIT: When was the last time the impeller and t-stat were changed out? When the engine is at idle, you should be able to put your fingers on the flat area on top and just forward of the head for several seconds before having to move them. If you can't, better look at the impeller and t-stat.

Crankcase oil.....tell ya' what ya' need to do...

Take the rig to a wrench for repair and question him on proper care of the engine including periodic maint. Get a service manual. It'll pay for itself over the long run. Read it and understand the engine. You can get the generics right here at iboats or see the link below for a OEM manual.

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

But, do see the wrench and ask questions.
