Ok, so I have a 1953-54 15hp evinrude fastwin outboard and I'm working on getting it to well... work. I rebuilt the carb cleaned it all out put in a new impeller and everything but the last thing I need to do is change the coils ect. but I cant find out how to get the fly wheel off. I removed the pull startwe and undid the three bolts on the top and also the big one in the center. Am I missing anything? I have an older style balanced puller that looks like a giant lobster claw. Is it just that I need a new puller or am I missing a bolt or screw or somthing? Thanks for any advice you guys can offer.

Re: Evinrude Flywheel Problem

You shouldn't use a claw style puller on the flywheel in might warp, bend or break it. Pick up a harmonic balance puller and some grade 8 - 1/4 bolts. Use the 3 holes around the shaft. The flywheel is a dry fit and can often be stuck on pretty hard.

I had pulled one a little while ago that I sprayed the shaft with PB Blaster and kept tightening the puller. Left it on over night and repeated the PB and tightening the next day. I then heated it with a propane. As I was doing something else nearby it popped off. The flywheel lifted off by almost a foot. It was a pain but it did come off.

Good luck

The reason I always leave the nut threaded on a couple turns to keep the flywheel from taking a ride.

I'm learning as I go and that's a great tip. Thankfully my work area has some old carpet over the cement.
