I have an old evinrude 5.5 hp fisherman E. it runs like a champ but will not stay in forward gear. it stays in reverse just fine, but when motoring in forward, it jumps back into neutral.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Two things. 1. worn clutch dog. 2. worn forward gear hub worn out. Not uncommon. Disassemble lower unit housing and see whats broke or worn out! Good luck and post back. (Welcome to iboats)

Please post model # and I will post a pic of your lower unit.

That lower unit should be the same, reguardless of year. There may be differences in driveshaft length and shift rod length, but that would be about it.

It's likely that your shift fork and/or clutch dog is excessivly worn.

Re: Evinrude fisherman E 5 1/2

where do i look for the serial or model number. What is a clutch dog and shift fork. I have had the lower unit and power head off. I thought there was a way to adjust the shift "linkage" but found there was not any adjustment. where do i find new parts for this motor and is it a simple put the new parts in and i'm good to go.

I've looked at the shift fork and the gears involved with shifting and I don't see anything abnormal, but I don't know what is normal or abnormal

thanks
