Went to run my 2004 evinrude etec 90hp and it would rev up the die back down then rev up again, i have checked all the fuel lines and they seem ok. The primer bulb will not stay hard. Cant figure out where the air is getting into the fuel lines. Tank is new also, only about a month old.

Have you put a computer to the EMM yet? Do you have an OEM shop manual? Without these tools, you don't have much of a chance to diagnose any running issues. The primer bulb doesn't STAY hard on any motor.

Given your knowledge level, your probably going to be ahead taking the motor to a BRP dealer.

motor ran fine the day before with no issues. Any idea if this type of issue would be covered under warranty?

Diagnosing the running issue probably is not covered. You're most likely in the extended third party warranty time now, so it's a different deal. I would call your dealer to find out where you stand before doing anything else.

Etec's are totally different animals, not many of us with experience with them. suggest you consult a shop the is experienced in servicing them.

There was a reason I asked about the primer bulb.

If no alarms probably not an engine problem.
Try using an external tank for test.
A new tank may be as 'defective' as a new engine.
Bad vent may be one thing, leaking pick-ups another.

bulb will get hard before running. Motor will idle fine, but with higher rpms it seems it will jump up and down min rpms like it is not getting fuel or air is in the fuel line. Could this possibly be bad gas? i may dump the gas and see what it does with new gas.

Re: Evinrude etec

I have heard of some of these mtrs having fuel line probs on them due to ethanol fuel. They would swell up inside and block off fuel flow. The reason I asked about the primer bulb getting hard it could have been a ruptured fuel pump diaphram.

Re: Evinrude etec

A properly running E-Tec does not need the primer bulb to be used after the initial commissioning startup. I have never used the primer bulb for my pair of 175 E-Tecs. That's in over three seasons of operation. Just turn the key and they start ... always. No choke or primer, no fast idle, no primer bulb, period. The EMM does everything necessary for a proper start @ 480 RPM. Spooky, but I like it.

Re: Evinrude etec

If it is surging at idle the following is likely culprits:
1) TPS
2) Vapor seperator float purging fuel into motor
3) Lift pump diaphram (remove pulse hose and see if wet inside)
4) Sticking injector or worn pintle tip not sealing
5) Electric fuel pump failing ( pressure to injectors varying)

Its not surging at idle, runs fine idling. only problems are in higher rpms, like it is starving for fuel.
