Evinrude E-Tec 90 making a popping noise

A couple years ago I purchased an Angler 180DC with an Evinrude E-Tec 90 Horsepower engine. The motor has always had a popping noise at between 1000 and 2000 rpm. I have taken it to the dealer several times to fix it. They replaced the spark plugs and updated the firmware. It's better now, but not completely fixed. Now it sounds like a large popping noise at ~3000rpm. The mechanic told me that it has something to do with how the flow of fuel changes from a drip to a spray or something. I'm not sure I trust him. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? I'm not sure if running it this way is damaging it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's been a while since I've done much engine work, but isn't a popping noise generally indicative of a backfire through the carb?

A google search shows that the most likely cause of the popping you're experiencing is probably either due to a fuel/air mix issue or a timing issue...

Popping that only occurs while accelerating then resumes normal operation suggests air/fuel and/or timing problem, and possibly a vacuum line disconnected.

Popping that is consistent (or continues) under a load suggests plug wire crossed and/or cross-firing, and even a mechanical weakness in valve springs or worn cam lobe(s).

Intermittent popping suggests a vacuum leak in close proximity of the carb(s), a weak accelerator pump, and/or a worn out butterflies in the carb(s).

It depends on how the motor is propped and setup, along with which software is installed.

Depending on the model number of your motor, there is an update on the engine software that allows calibration on the TPS for a smoother operation. See your dealer or call Evinrude customer service to find a good dealer to fix you up.

That motor is also critical for the correct operating temperature at low speeds. There is a service bulletin for the dealer to reference if they are not familiar with testing for temps.
