Hello, I just can't get the engine to run properly. I took a closer look at the carburetor and found that the previous owner had tinkered with it. The nozzle from the float chamber to the intake duct broke off and was glued on. The leadership of the swimmer has started. I guess I need a different carburetor. Now my question to you specialists. Does it have to be the same carburetor or will other evinrude 40 hp carburetors from younger engines also fit. Don't want to put a lot of money into the engine either, otherwise it's no longer worth it. It would be a pity, because the motor looks very good with my boat bellboy. As a replacement, I have an evinrude 40ps BE 40EL with a defective CDI. Cdi is ordered in America. Hope it runs then. Thanks in advance Rainer

Many newer 40 HP motors used 2 carburetors.-----No choke plates.----Different high speed jet. ----Different bore size.-----Shop carefully.----Many " sellers " are just that.----They have something to sell , they do not know what you need !!

That's already clear. If I think correctly, there are up to the 80 engine 40hp from Evinrude, which only have 1 carburettor. Would they possibly fit?

A carb from another 40hp of the same year, would be best, as there were some Variations as the Years went along. From 1960 thru 62, the Carb had adjustable High and Low Speed mixture Adjustments, later ones had a Fixed High Speed Jet(with an exception in 71, but that engine was based on a different Block). Up till 64 the Electric Starting Engines had a Hot Water Automatic Choke, from 64 till 67, a Hot Air Automatic Choke, when it was replaced with a Thermo-Electric Choke, in 1968. A couple of years later, it just became an on/off Electric, or Manual Choke, depending on Starting System. Also through the Years there may have been some slight changes made to parts of the Linkage that interact with the Armature Plate. In 1971, Evinrude/Johnson switched a Powerhead from and different Division, and I don't know what changes occurred with that one.
While a Carb from years other than the same year as yours, will bolt on, it might take some swapping of the Peripherals on it, to get it Compatibility

Correct----There was left over inventory in the mid 1980's that was marketed as COMMERCIAL models.----It was the left over , mid 1970's model with updated ignition.---Different choke / primer set-up-------What is the exact model # of the motor that you are getting the carburetor from ??

There was no " thermo-electric choke " on 40 HP models between 1968 to 1970 !!!

Thank you, I'll see if I can get something of equal value or I'll try to carefully drill out the nozzle. Maybe there are still spare parts for the carburetor at evinrude. I have a parts catalogue. As I said, it has to pay off, I paid 150 dollars for the motor.

Different wording / mistake in the manual.------They used the hot air choke with electric solenoid.-----The 1968 model 55 HP used the thermo-electric choke.--Duel coil solenoid.----Choke would energize / close halfway with key turned to on.---When motor warmed up this choke opened up.

40302 shows up as a 1963.

Ahh the old Hot Water Choke, that is the Reddish-Brown thing on the Starboard side of the carb

Your carburetor uses a hot water choke.----Is that yours or the one you are buying.----Is the thermostat in place on your motor ?
