Hello, maybe someone can help me. Which gear oil is suitable for a 1963 evinrude big twin 40 hp? I would also like to retrofit an alternator. what are the possibilities? Thank you Rainer

They came with a 10 amp belt driven , optional generator.-----But today you might be able to fit an alternator from small car.----Depends on what tools / ambition you have.

If it has electric shift, use Johnson/Evinrude premium blend.

Big Twin is manual shift. Electric shift is Lark. Any 80-90 wt outboard gear oil is ok for Big Twin.

Hello, thank you very much, but I have problems with the motor. Compression is only 4 bar, carburetor also has problems, it just runs very badly. He starts badly and goes out again, does not take gas. spark plugs are fouled. I hope I can somehow get it to work. Would be a pity about the beautiful old device

What I mean, spark plugs out, engine compression measured. both cylinders 4 bar /58 psi pressure. think too little, right?

58 PSI is almost no compression. Was that done with the Electric Starter, or pulling on the Rope? If on the rope it also brings up, are you certain about the year? For a few early years, the 40 hp had a Compression Relief System to make it easier to pull start. Our 63 40 didn't have it. If yours does, it certainly result in lower than normal numbers

As for Fubar, just google it.

i measured the compression with e starter. Then I guess I have a problem

Barometric pressure has to do with air.-----So 1 bar = 14.7 psi.------Some things are different in Europe.

Compression should be 110psi or greater. Remove exhaust covers and check pistons and rings. Rings should spring in and out when pressed. If all OK, then time to pull the head and replace head gasket.

Hello everyone, I injected some fluid into the cylinder and let it work for a few days. I then warmed up the engine and measured the compression again. I've got around 100psi now, but the engine isn't running very well. I think it's the carburetor and ignition settings. Does anyone have a manual that I can use to adjust them. I bought the engine partially disassembled and the carburetor and the linkage were loose. It would be great if someone could help me. Many thanks in advance. Rainer
