Evinrude 9.9hp Timeline

Hi, I have a 1982 Evinrude 9.9 outboard. While looking for spare parts on ebay and Craigslist, I come across lots of parts that will fit (for example) a 1983 or a 1980 etc. I cant help but wonder if these parts will fit my 1982.
Does anyone out there know of a cross reference guide, or maybe could just tell me what years other than 1982 parts will fit my 1982 motor...

go to marineengine.com, check your motor against other model years. ( use a note pad if you are looking for ignition parts, as there could be 3 or 4 options)

In general, these motors, both 9.9 and 15, share many parts from 72 to 92, and some gear case parts into the late 90's. Leeroy's Ramblings me tinned above, is a wealth of information. Checking individual part numbers a sites like marineegine.com is the definitive test.

You may even use the parts catalog at boats -dot -net (IBoats blocks out the hyperlink). When clicking on the part number, you will get up a list at the bottom where this parts are/have been used, sorted by year and model number. Follow the rule that a later number of a specific part normally will fit all previous (superseeded) numbers, but not always the other way around.
