We raced the Evinrude 9.9 against their 9.8 on water skimmers and they always won...then my uncle showed us that the 15 cowl would fit on the 9.9 motor.

They could never figure out how we could beat them!

Re: year of HP ratings change. prop VS. crank

ICOMIA Standard 28-83 was developed in 1983 (thus the -83 signification of the standard).

The standard was developed because of the inconsistencies between some manufacturers rating their outboards at the prop and some at the crank.

The hp losses due to prop ratings are minimal. 2-3%, maybe 5% at most. 10-15% is unreasonable as there is only one gear reduction and only a few bearings. You're simply not going to lose 20-25 hp to the prop on a 200 hp outboard.

If you wanted to get there real fast and look cool, you bought a Merc. (think tower of power)
I had a TOP, but I would rather have had a V6.
In 1975 when the V6s were first introduced as Production Motors, the Merc certainly put the OMC to shame, even if it was rated 25 less HP. It however was a totally new Engine, unlike the OMCs, which were just 2 more Cylinders stacked on top of the V4

I have a 1970 9.5 on a 14' tinny. One vacation I replaced it with a 1984 9.9. The difference was negligible.

One thing I can say about the 9.5, though. It simply runs and runs and is probably the best OB I ever had.
I do not believe that for one minute. The 9.9 was a significant power improvement over the 9.9.

Agreed. The old 9.5 felt like a 5. The next gen 9,9 felt like a 10. The last gen 9.9 feels like a 15.
