I have an Evinrude 9.5 and it will die after running for a minute or so. I pump up the bulb and it will run again. I will continue to run as long as I am squeezing the bulb. I think that this is a fuel pump problem since I have already changed the bulb and fuel line and made sure that the tank is not sucking air. Can anyone confirm this? Or does the problem lie elswhere?

Howdy, Nathan.

I think you are on the right track. Overhaul your fuel pump and you should be okay.

By the way, welcome to the board. You seem to be a pretty sharp troubleshooter, why don't you hang out here some and help out other boaters?

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Well I appreciate the compliment Mr. Cornwell. I was raised around boats and have had them my entire life. My father told me a secret to troubleshooting anything, its called the K.I.S.S. method. Keep It Simple Stupid, just start with the little stupid things first then go to the hard things.

I was having the same problem with my 1968 9.5 evinrude.I replaced the tank and fuel line and it didn't fix the problem.I fixed the problem by making sure all the fuel line connections on the engine were tight.I used small ty-raps instead of the factory hose clamps. Runs just fine now.Good Luck.

Hi, Craig.

Looks like you've learned one of the most important lessons in outboard repair:

Find out what the problem is first. Then replace or overhaul parts.

Good luck. :)

The fuel pump on this engine can't be rebuilt. You have to buy a new one but they don't cost an arm & a leg. The filter screen & cap CAN be replaced on this pump.

Bad fuel line connectors (o-rings) at the tank or engine can also produce the symptoms you describe...I assume these were part of the new fuel line you said you installed?

First, KCA, you need to start a new thread, not hijack one 6 years old.

In that thread, tell us what running rough means and why you have changed a bunch of stuff.

Good luck. :)
