My 8HP Evuinrude (1986 model, old friend) started to overheat so I shut it down and expected that the impeller needed a change. I took it ashore and started to remove the lower unit as I have done before. The unit would not come down after all bolts disconnected. Gear changing did nothing. I them tried to remove the powerhead, working from the other end. The same problem. I could not seperate the units. Any suggestions.

I assume some bushing, shaft quide or something must have melted and is locking the shats but I cannot even begin to imagine where or how to seperate. HELP please?

I'm not sure of this story but, I think a friend of mine took the spur gear off the shaft in the gear box and just pulled hard enough to brake the water pump housing and got a lower unit off. But, he found the spline of the shaft seized to the crank and finally had to junk the motor.

is this engine used in saltwater?? it sounds like the shaft is stuck in the bottom of the powerhead.u can set the engine upside down and get some pb blaster from your local auto store(this stuff is liquid gold)spray the shaft and let it run down to the powerhead let it sit for a few hours or days the longer the better. but keep spraying the shaft when you think about it. you want that stuff to soak in and work.i had to do this to a parts engine i have. it finally came free after 2 days of spraying and playing with it.

This may seem like a dumb question but did you disconnect the shift linkage. I believ its behind the water intake screens on your motor.
