Evinrude 88 SPL

I recently bought a boat powered by a 1991 Evinrude 88 SPL. It was partially rebuilt several years ago when #1 lost compression due supposedly to a thermostat problem. The engine runs good except at idle when in the water.....when flushing in my driveway it idles great. I have two questions: what can I do in terms of preventative maintenance to ensure it keeps running good; and, what can I do about the idle?

Bob.... If the engine's not idling properly, it's not running good.

(Compression & Spark Test)

1st - Regardless of what problem one might encounter, always start with the basic troubleshooting procedure. Check the compression which should be in the range of 100+ psi and even on all cylinders.

2nd - With the spark plugs removed, rig up some type of spark tester whereas you can set a gap to be jumped. Set the gap to 7/16". The spark should jump the gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.

If the above checks out as it should, the idle problem would most likely be due to fouled carburetors, in which case the cure would be to remove, clean, and rebuild them. Let us know what you find.

Re: Evinrude 88 SPL

I had the compression tested before I bought it and it came out as 120, 130, 125, 130 (1,2,3,4). It idles at 1000 RPM in my driveway, but only about 600-700 in the water and stalls about a 1/3 of the time. Are you suggesting cleaning the carbs in aputting a carb kit? Can a moderately savy guy replace the pump and thermostats pretty easily?

Bob..... The 1000 idle rpm on a flushette is normal if the engine is a 20" shaft. A 25" shaft on a flushette would require 1200 rpm. The idle would drop to normal when in the water due to exhaust back pressure.

You made no reply about the spark. With the s/plugs out, is the spark jumping a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame? A engine will run on weak ignition to a degree, but not properly.

The compression concerns me. The way that you explain it.... you have normal and even compression of the port bank (#2 & #4) of 130 psi, but on the starboard bank (#1 & #3) there is 120 and 125 psi respectively. I realize that ten (10) psi difference doesn't sound like much, but it is a difference that shouldn't be there and could be the start of a larger problem.

I wouldn't recommend removing the cylinder heads right now, but keep my remarks in mind. If all else fails, then remove the heads to inspect the pistons, cylinder walls, gasket sealing surfaces etc.

The spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040 .

Back the carb roller away from the cam. Check the linkages between the carburetor throttle butterflies. The butterflies should open and close at the same time. At dead idle, both butterflies must be absolutely closed... not one closed and one ever so slightly open.

The throttle butterflies should just start to open when the scribe mark on the cam is dead center with the carburetor roller... not before.

Last resort, if all of the above is as it should be (excepting the head removal)..... then yes, I would recommend removing, cleaning, and rebuilding the carburetors with complete carb kits.

If the problem persists after that, then the cylinder head scenario falls into place.

I haven't had a chance to check the spark yet....too busy at work! I'll follow up on your suggestions. Not sure if it is a 20" or 25" shaft.

Bob, you may have idle RPM too low. This should be set with the motor in the water (not on muffs). Check your manual for correct idle RPM. Stalling may be due to idle set too low.
