Evinrude 70hp - engine won't crank

Model: AE70TLCDC
Asked this last time but got carried away with oil alarms.
Sometimes the motor will not crank. When it does it starts fine. Battery is new. I thought of the neutral interlock or overboard switch but this seems OK. The previous time it happened I unplugged the big plug at the engine and plugged it again and this seemed to work. But the last time it did not work. I suspect electrics. Where could I get a wiring diagram of the system? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

The wiring diagram is included in the OMC shop manual which you should get along with the parts manual if you are inclined to do your own work. I got mine here:

http://www.theoutboardwizard.bizhosting.com/parts_service_and_owners_manuals.html

On the cranking - I suggest that you remove all connections to the starter and the starter solinoid, clean thoroughly and reconnect. Also disconnect the plug and clean the inside the best that you can and shoot a spray cleaner of your choice & reconnect.

I assume that you cleaned the battery terminals.

Thanks for the advice. Getting a manual to New Zealand could be a bit difficult but I'll give it a go. I see they may be able to do individual pages so could possible get the wiring page (unless someone can help with an e-mailable version).
Did check the battery - OK. Still trims and tilts. I'll work my way back from the starter over the week-end.

Engine FAQ. "Outboard wont start".

That's an '86, in case you didn't know.

Good luck. :)

Also remove and clean the ground lugs on the engine block.Sometimes there's just a bit of corrosion which can cause you to lose juice to the starter motor.

When it doesn't crank, can you hear the starter solenoid clicking ? If not,one other possibility is the starter contacts of the ignition switch itself are not making all the time.Replacement of the switch is the best fix for that.

Thanks guys. Turned out to be a dead solenoid on the starter motor.
