Evinrude 70 stalls when pulling skier out

With no load the engine is perfect, the moment I have a skier on the back, engage the gear and throttle up, it stalls. The only way round it is to whack it from neutral straight to full power. This is fine for good skiers but for children it is a tad exciting. I have had it checked out, it has new plugs new jets and the compression is fine. I used to pull skiers with a 70 and it was a challenge at times. The carbs were always critical to getting up smoothly. I had it on a lightweight 16' boat. The engine is an '80 bought new, and is still on the boat. Maybe you need a larger motor or different prop?

Thanks Kalloway, My engine was bought new in 80 and is also on a lightweight 16ft boat. I think you are right on carbs but I have put new bowls on them and new jets so I don't know what else there is? Are there jets or cavities in the carb bodies that can block? I left the boat idle for 5 years and the oil in the fuel went solid so this may be the problem. Trouble is they are such good economical engines-had it out yesterday for nearly 5 hours and only used 3 1/2 gals! fantastic!<br />Cheers<br />Jonathan Moore

You may want to try an decarb additive in your fuel after a spray can of decarb cleaner. Also, change the plugs after decarbing. If the carbon has gotten real bad, it can plug up the exaust ports, creating too much back pressure.<br />Besides, it cant hurt.

I put trim tabs on the boat and fixed most of the problems. Just inexpensive fixed, manually adjustable ones.
