Hi all, im having abit of a problem with my 2 stroke evinrude 60hp (not sure year?)
We was out on the boat a couple of weeks ago and everything ran fine (in fact the best its ever ran in the 18 months ive owned it).
Anyway, on our way back to the shore we ran out of petrol  so I filled it up and it started straight away as expected.
When I got home I got the hose pipe and flush muffs out and when I came to start it it didnt crank over.
I have since put new spark plugs in, cleaned the fuel lines and filter and im still not getting anything.
Now im out of ideas and dont know where to start so if anybody has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

Thanks
Lee

specify, crank over, the starter will not turn the motor, the motor will not start and run. have you check to see if you have spark. what is the model # of the motor?

Re: evinrude 60hp not starting

it is a 1981 manual here : http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=models.main&year=1981&ID=95079
it is a 2 cylinder 60 hp. remove the spark plug, put the plug back in the wire, hold the metal edge of the plug against the block, with INSULATED pliers, have some one turn the key. you should see the spark jump across the plug.

also what are you doing when you are trying to start it. step by step. lets see if you are doing the right procedure.

did you just get this motor? has it been sitting up, un-run for a period or time?

Re: evinrude 60hp not starting

I will check the spark when I get home from work tomorrow then, cheers.
I already have a manual for it but I cannot find anything in it to help and theres nobody who deals with evinrude engines within 50 miles who can look at it.

I pump the primer bulb until it goes hard, turn the key and it usually starts. Most of the time I give it a little revs for 10-15 seconds when starting from cold and then I let it idle until everyones in the boat (2-3 mins). Sometimes I need to push the key in if it sturggles to start but this isnt very often.

When I flush it out, I let the water run through the muffs/outboard for 5 mins, prime it, turn key, leaverunning for 10 mins to flush out, switch off and then grease everything and clean it readyfor next time I use it.

Cheers

Re: evinrude 60hp not starting

when cold starting you should pump the bulb, turn the key to on, push the key in at the same time you turn the key, for the first or second try, then it should start. pushing the key in adds addition gas to help it start, excessive use can flood the carb. the rest is fine.

Re: evinrude 60hp not starting

Is it a major task removing the carb to clean it? This was going to be my next step but having never done work on an outboard I didnt feel 100% confident. I will check the spark tomorrow and post back if it has/hasnt got a spark.
Sounds daft but could the fuel mixture cause it to not start? Reason im saying that is because the spare tank had been stood for around 3 months as ive not needed to use it.
