I just bought my first boat today and am excited to restore it. the engine is a Evinrude 60, I have no clue on what year it is and I tried to look it up by model number with no luck. Any ideas how I can find this info? I have the model number and serial number off the tag on the side of the motor. A little help for the new guy would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Evinrude 60

Model-601736
Serial-j14205

1971 60hp Johnson with Hydro Electric Shift.

Note that gearcase lube for this model engine must specify on the container that it is for electric shift outboards and will be called either "Premium Blend" or "Type C". Usually available at Wal*Mart, K-Mart, Dealerships, Marine Stores, etc.

Thank you. How did you go about finding that out? I looked every where online. Where would you suggest getting parts for that motor?

60173 is a valid model number and is listed in the OMC Model Guide booklet. The last number of the model number (6 in your case) is simply a factory run number of no consequence. Strange you had a problem locating that number.

The model numbers of the 1960's/70's always listed the HP first, then the year. There were a few exceptions in the early 1960's.

In your case: 60(hp) - 1(1971) - 73(These were codes pertaining to other aspects such as electric, length of shaft, etc)

Re: Evinrude 60

Any Ideas on where I could find a block for this motor?

New ones are no longer available and if they were would be so expensive you wouldnt bother anyway, you could repower with a later mechanical shift motor for less.....being an electric shift model im not sure i'd throw a secondhand one at it either.....what's the issue with the block you have?
