Evinrude 60 HP (3 Cylinder) Won't Suck Fuel

Hi there,

I'm a first time boat owner. We boat a 24 ft pontoon with a Evinrude 60 HP motor on it. Things have been good until about the 8th or 10th time we took the boat out and then the motor starting acting up and started not wanting to start up or stay running properly. After investigating the issue it appears that the motor is not sucking up the fuel like it's suppose to. I have no idea what causes this or how to fix it as I know absolutely nothing about motors.

I have done a little maintenance though to try to fix it.. Here's what I have done:
- Replaced fuel line and bulb from gas tank to motor. It has special quick connectors on the end. The quick connectors were NOT replaced, just the rubber hoses.
- I also installed an inline fuel filter on that new fuel line.
- I replaced the 3 spark plugs.

I noticed that when priming the motor with the bulb that it does pump fuel into the fuel filter and into the carbs, however the bulb is really hard to squeeze like there is some sort of restriction or blockage of some sort. I have taken apart the fuel lines I could get to and they appear to be clear with no blockage. I have also taken apart the top part of the fuel tank that has the fuel gauge, float and the sucker hose. All of that appeared to be clear and no obstructions.

I haven't the slightest clue about what could be going on here and I would appreciation any sort of help that anyone could offer on this matter.

I hope it's nothing major. I can't really afford to get a marine mechanic to come over and do diagnostics on it.

Well you should post the model number then we know what motor we are dealing with. Have you done any checking of the mechanics of the motor like compression check?

Just to cover the dumb stuff, primer bulb is pointed the right way, correct? Are you buying good OMC/brp parts?

The ball is supposed to get hard that is normal. Do a compression and spark test. and the model #

Yes, primer bulb and fuel filter is pointed correctly. I'm buying aftermarket stuff from Amazon. These items have many positive ratings.

I would like to add that the motor appears to be leaking fuel / oil from somewhere at the top of the engine and it's running down the shaft on the outside of the motor and dripping off the bottom. I guess this would indicate a bad seal somewhere, right? Any clue where I may find this seal? I have visually looked it over, but I can't tell where it's actually coming from.

I can't quite tell. I don't see it oozing from anywhere and I have looked through everything pretty through. It may be, I'm not really sure. It's all under the engine inside the engine compartment, not like sprayed everywhere, but just liked dripped from somewhere, just wet like everywhere, then it's coming out the compartment drain holes and running down the back of the engine. It's not a lot, but it's a noticeable amount and I can smell the gas when I go outside every day from it leaking. The gas can was getting heated during the day and then expanding and then forcing fuel through the line into the engine and I thought that was it, but I loosened the fuel cap to prevent that and it still appears to be leaking from somewhere.

Well there are 3 Carbs and associated Fuel Lines, a few Oil Recirculation Lines/Hoses, Intake Manifold and Carb Gaskets, Crankcase Gaskets/Seals, as well as a VRO Pump, all of which can Leak.

Just a guess, but willing to bet you have some sticky floats. Probably time to get factory carb rebuild kits and do a thorough clean and rebuild kit for the carbs. While your at it a rebuild kit for the fuel pump is not that expensive. If your gonna do your own work, find a factory service manual for making all the adjustments needed.

So this motor does have a VRO pump on it? If so, why do I have to mix the fuel and the gas then? I thought that was it's job to do that. Where would I find this module at?

Send pictures of the motor so we can verify the vro has not been removed or caped. Bunch of shots from the port side.

If there is a working vro then you shouldn't be mixing your gas.
