Hi, I have a 16 ft Alumininum fish/ski boat with a 1986 50 HP Evinrude. Last time out I had a larger load than usual. When I went up on plane it felt like the prop was cavitating. The rpm's went up and prop lost bite.
Is it possible that the rubber hub can go bad and cause this? At lower speeds it seemes ok. Also the prop is a 12.5 x 15 and I cannot seem to find one this size. The boat has no tach but what diamter- pitch would give me similar performance.
Thanks!

On the 50 hp, if it is a twin they built thousands and thousands of them and you can bet OMC, Michigan Wheel and others built tons of props for them. 15" pitch was a common size back when we did a lot of tri-hull group family boating. They're out there.

Remove your prop and with a grease pencil, permanent marker or what have you, mark a line from the center of the hub (spline out to the outer diameter of the prop. Go and do what you do. Then pull the prop and if your lines are no longer lined up, you have spun your prop....prop shops can re-hub it for you if needed or get a new one.

Otherwise you have too much pitch for your application and the heavy load is causing your engine to "ventilate"....suck in air from the surface just above the anti-vent plate.

Course you would have a heads up on this, if your engine was biting clear water and your rpm's weren't up in the operating range then that too would indicate overloading....course with no tach, who knows. There are a lot of cheap tach's out there. My riding lawn mower has one (digital and very accurate) that has a sense wire that just wraps around the sparkplug wire on one cylinder. Surely if my lawnmower has it, it couldn't be very expensive. I didn't check but probably it has a 12v wire and a gnd wire to complete the powering of the digital circuits therein...I never bothered looking under the dash to see.....but the electronics has to run on something and it has hours on it displayed with the key off soooooo it obviously gets power and a gnd.

HTH,

Thanks for the info on the tach and the link. I looked and couldn't find em anywhere! After running the boat for 25 years with no issues I doubt if its overloaded. In fact the boat jumps on plane fast and in the past I was even considering trying to get more prop. But I will stick to what I know works. usually its only my wife and myself in the boat but the other day we had 3 other people. I will try the grease pencil trick see if its slipping. At least its better than breaking a shear pin! Will I need to purchase the trust washer and or spacer as found in the listing? Or will the original one be ok to use? The Sea Nymph is a very similar boat. This is a Mirrorcraft Pro Fisherman. Again Thanks Guys!

Sir, "3 other people" in addition to 2 in front of a 50 hp engine..........take a break man. Have a cup of coffee and relax. You don't have a problem with what else you said.

Borrow your ladie's red fingernail paint and follow the marking procedure if no grease pencil available, just let dry properly, had same problem as yours in a old engine, went for a short wot spin, removed prop, mark didn't match. Vulcanized rubber hubs don't lasts forever, someday will die.

Happy Boating
