evinrude 5.5 hp shifter - help!!!!!

Have an early to mid sixties 5.5 hp. been through engine and lower unit top to bottom. <br />reassembled with some new parts... shifter seems ok until power head goes on. <br />When pulling to start, something is coming out of allignment and then won't shift from <br />either neutral to forward or neutral to reverse. What am i missing?<br />thanks...shiftless

The only thing I can think of now is that you have some how loaded the driveshaft. Maybe you installed the crankshaft seals and spring wrong? Maybe you greesed the top of the driveshaft?

thanks for reply...we didn't grease top of driveshaft. crankshaft, spring and seals sounds like a problem. can you assist in how spring is loaded? <br />thanks<br />shiftless and want to go sailing.....

Did you check the pinion shaft shock absorber this little part is located under the impeller housing. Mine broke where the two connect it has a square spring that mates the two togather. if the spring breaks this can damage the impeller housing. So far i have not found a replacement. good luck.
