hey everyone....can't find the serial number on the 4hp evinrude outboard I just got. Do you know of any physical features that I can use to identify my motor? Or even hints on where the serial number is. I think I've looked the whole motor over, but I could have missed something.

Look for a quarter sized casting/welch plug (some call them freeze plugs) on the side of the cylinder block, toward the head. It will have the Model and Ser. #'s.

The Yachtwins have a much longer leg.

The lightwins usually have a weedless (slanted) lower unit.

I have a source for an online repair manual for 1973?1980 evinrude/johnson outboards. I've looked at it and all of the images look exactly like my motor (which is a 69). Were there any major changes in construction from 69?73?
