Hi...I have a '60 Evinrude 40hp w/electric start but no generator...on a Starcraft runabout. I am planning on "refurbishing" and am wodering what alternative motor with a generator might make sense.

What year did Evinrude add a generator?

Worse case I may just get a battery box/charger and start using the electric start...we have pull started for 25 years!

Thanks...Tom R

You've pull started the 40 hp for 25 years? Wow! I believe that '61 was the first year of the optional generator. I'm not sure if that means you cant add one on a '60 or not though.

Tom, The generator was mounted on the opposite side from the starter, in the front of the motor. It was belt driven off the flywheel. See if your motor has tapped holes to accept the generator bracket.

Also, that generator used an external voltage regulator, which was mounted in the cover of the "electric start box". See if you have the generator wires in your motor harness.

Tom, if that motor starts easily, and since your hand cranking it I assume it does, you can put a good size battery on it. Fully charged, it will start it about as much as most people need over a 3-day week-end. You'll need a charger to charge it up when not in use.

i have had many motors over the years, with out a charging system. just charge the battery the day before and go boating. back before alternators in vehicles, we used the same battery as the truck. boat battery went dead, we started the truck, and swapped batteries, and left the truck to charge the battery. didn't take long. or we push started the truck.

I think it will make most sense to put the battery box/charger concept back to work. I probably coule do the first start each day with pull start...sicne the first start may take a "few" pulls...used to be 1-2...now more like 5-10...probably needs some tlc...and MORE use.

Thanks...Tom R...BTW...we are forecasted to get 10"-16" of snow today...not sure why I am thinking about boat motors?

well a 25 year old motor could probably use a good carb cleaning, decarb, and new plugs, impeller to begin.

We all share your problem Tom :) Just dont start bringing the motors to bed with you during the winter, my wife tends to frown on that ;)

25 year old motor? It's a 1960, not a 1980. He says
we have pull started for 25 years
which may be how long he has owned it. Try a 47 year old motor (my how time flies).

Re: Evinrude 40HP...First Year w/Generator?

Actually bought the boat (1961 Starcraft) and motor mid 70's. Used the battery box/charger for maybe a year...and since then pull start...that seems like about 30+ years...it has been a great boat for raising a family of three kids at our cabin in Northern Minnesota. Now is time to get back in great shape for the seven grand kids...oldest 12 years old. They want to water ski too!

We also added a 70's 9.9 Evinrude w/ a 14' Alumacraft that we seem to use more often for fishing...and the older grandkids will soon be able to use it themselves.

Don't need the $20K plus new outfits to have fun...Tom R

1963 Johnson 40hp with a generator. I see a lot of the brackets on ebay and sometimes the generators as well.

Re: Evinrude 40HP...First Year w/Generator?

I will have to check my '60...but from memory that looks somewhat different. Do you know if the generators will work on the '60 w/the correct bracket? If it was not a '60 option I am wondering if it is a workable retrofit.

Thanks...Tom R

I'm pretty sure the generator was available at least back in 56.
Generator only charges at about 1500+rpm and not much at that.
It is plenty to maintain battery but not much for any heavy use.
You can start many, many times without charging. We ran a basic grp 24 car battery for years charged about every 3 weeks heavy use weekends starting and lights sit for the week and so on into early Dec. in the north east.Would give plenty of warning with weak cranking. In a pinch you could
pull the cord and hit the starter and it would crank.Of course that was an 18.

Re: Evinrude 40HP...First Year w/Generator?

The optional DC Generator kit appeared in 1957 for the 35hp motors and continued all the way into the early '70s. Minor changes were made as electrical wireing systems changed. Also the '57-58 models had a modified bracket to accomodate the clamshell hoods, Johnson being different than Evinrude in that respect.
