I have power to the battery lug, power when turning the key to both small lugs but nothing to the starter lug when key turned to start. Don't really know how to bypass the mercury switches but did use the disconnect knife connection to no avail. Can anyone offer any other help with this issue? Thanks

mdl#| year ? see diag. from max-rules.com 35hp

solenoid MUST be grounded via the mercury switch and cut out switch.. B+ must reach the solenoid control post to kick in ... just follow the wires with a VOM
test solenoid coil ohms between small control porst and grd post... should see a few ohms if not coil is open and dead

Thanks much for the reply. Everything is hooked up as you describe. Ran the OHM test and have 8. Should be good. Solenoid is grounded as you describe. Seems to be boiling down to the mercury switches but unsure how to check them. Do not have a generator.

the mercury switch is just a glob of floating mercury in a bottle which closes 2 contacts to let the ground pass to operate the solenoid if... the engine is not tilted up or in gear on diff. engines mdl.

just short the 2 wires (if 2 wires) as a qwick test or measure the ground ohms each side of the switch wires with the engine frame ground ....should be the same value ) 0 ohms .

if single wire switch make certain the switch body contact to engine frame is clean !!

to service your oldy. this book for $20 has all you need !!

If throttle is open too far the mercury switch prevents starter from working.
