I have an old Evinrude 35 hp outboard. Model 35852R.........Serial No. C7014689. I turn the key and nothing happens......no reaction whatsoever. I can push the the key in and turn and the electric choke activates...........but not a sound from the engine. No solenoid sound, no starter action.........any suggestions? The battery is showing 12.92 volts off load and is a 1000 crank amp battery. I do not have a manual. Thanks for any advice or diagnostics that you can give me. Brian. British Columbia, Canada.

Have you tried to jumper out the solinoid to see if that was the problem?

How do you mean........connect the positive from the battery direct the positive connecton on the starter.......or jump the positive connection from the battery with wire to the starter postive connection?

perhaps I should have said........should I jump the connection from the solenoid with a piece of wire (assuming that the solenoid is the square thing next to the starter!)and connect to the pos on the starter.

Yep, that's it. Jump the large lug to the other large lug (that connects to the post on the starter). Use a jumper cable if you can fit it in there and try to contact the nut so you don't mess up the threads with the arc.

PS - That's a '78

Re: Evinrude 35 hp fails to start

Thanks for the offer of help it was much appreciated. However, it was not the solenoid as it turns out. I ended up talking with a very nice guy named Keith from Cascade Marine in Chilliwack, BC. He suggested that I "wiggle" the gear shift a little bit and try to start. It worked perfectly........apparently it is quite common with old Evinrudes. Even though you think the lever is in neutral it may not be because of age and wear. It has to make the sensing microswitch to establish the lever is selected to neutral.Hope this may help someone else out there. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my plea for help. Brian.
