Evinrude 25hp outboard wants to die when I give it gas

Hello all,

My Evinrude 25 just started acting up. When I give it gas it wants to die. I can fiddle with the choke and get it to go from an idle to a faster idle, but if I try to rev it up it bogs down and dies, either with prop engaged or not. I thought it was a fuel line issue -- the connector at the engine was pretty loose -- so I tighten up all the hose clamps on the line and the bulb, and replaced the engine fuel line connection. Still does it. I didn't replace the gas tank connector, not sure if it needs it or not. I do see bubbles in the gas line as it comes out of the tank (clear gas line). Not sure if that's related or not. Next I'll replace that connector if I can find one.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated!

Model number or at least the year if known.

Most likely fuel carb related, is your fuel filtered?

Either your running to lean or crud in carb.

A 1953 model , or 73 , 83 . 97 or 2004 model ?----Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" or more on all leads ?-----Post the actual compression test values.

Sorry, I didn't provide enough specificity. I will look at the engine tomorrow and report back. I'm on a fishing trip for the week and don't have anyone to look at it while I'm here. Trying to figure out a way to handle it myself instead of leaving it with a repair guy. Thanks for the interest! -- Harold

My evinrude is a 1998 25hp outboard. If it has a fuel filter I can't find it. The fuel line runs to this (see photo), which I'm guessing is the fuel pump, and maybe the fuel filter is incorporated into that? In any case, I can remove and clean the carb while I'm here if necessary, and if there is a fuel filter somewhere, if anyone knows where it is, please indicate where I can find it, and I can check that. Thanks again for any guidance.

Also, I took off the first section of the fuel pump, found a mesh screen in that part, which looked very clean. So if that's the fuel filter, it's not dirty.

That's the crappy one that screens boulders. I install a throw away plastic one on that same line. Pretty sure it's 10 microns.

The screen is all you need.-----Thousands of motors running fine with just that screen / filter in the pump inlet cover.

Sorry, but the filters help....and they help a lot.

On my bigger motors I run 2.

In fact, the more I think of it, you can't have enough filters. That screen does a poor job.

I have to buy a socket extension to get the starter off (that bottom bolt) and then remove the carb for cleaning... Here are photos of the motor.

The trick to removing the carb without removing the starter is to use a cold chisel to remove the starboard carb nut. Make sure to use your cold chisel marks to install the nut correctly.

Now I've done it both ways but this saves you time. I mainly want people to do it "the long method" on here but one of the other problem solvers on here already disclosed that trick recently.

Two nuts, a few hoses and your off to the races.

Again though, to save time....turn in idle circuit screw and count the turns until "lightly seated" write that down.

Remove screw. Remove upper plug, remove float bowl nut that has the primer nipple on it.
Blow out the original 1st screw that you removed and then flood it with fuel before putting it back all back together.

I've done that on the water before.

How did you remove the plug on the water? And did you have another one? Not sure if I can get the plug out without ruining it... Definitely would save some time though.

First things First ,No cold chisels, Do the job right and you wont wreck ****. Second thing is you dont need to take anything apart on the water to get the carb to fill. Open the low speed screw an 1/8 of a turn at a time and try that first.
