Evinrude 25 won't come out of forward

I just took the motor apart and put on a new water pump kit. Once I put it back together, I started it (apparently in forward) and it ran fine but would not shift out of forward. I took the gear shaft rod out when replacing the pump. Is there a certain way/position it should go back? Should it be in neutral when replacing? I'm lost...

what you did was adjust the shift rod. The tolerances are tight on those and if you are even .040 of an inch out you will have problems, although the tolerances vary. You will need to drop your lower unit again, re adjust the shift rod to the proper specs (found in your manual under "Lower Unit" ).The measurement is from the center of the shift rod connector hole to the surface of the gearcase.

I appreciate the advice, but have no clue. The shift rod is the large rod that goes up into the motor and down to the lower unit? Is there a diagram anywhere as to where to measure from/to?

Im not quite sure what year we are talking about here, but there are probably 2 shafts coming up from the lower unit. The larger one with the splines on the end is the drive shaft, the smaller other one is the shift rod. You probably had to disconnect the shift rod from a "bellcrank" from below the carbs in the cowl to get the lower unit to drop. Did you think it was "loose" so you atttempted to tighten it possibly? By tightening it you change the distance or length of it by screwing in the threads, hence it wont shift. Youll need to drop the lower unit again, find out the proper length, re adjust it then bolt it back up. Congratulations though on replacing the water pump without a manual.

Re: Evinrude 25 won't come out of forward

I believe the motor is a 2000 model. I understand which rod now. To get the water pump off this rod, I had to remove a little bell shaped plastic clip then slide a fitting with threads off. Then I slid all of the pump and gaskets off.

I reconnected it by screwing the fitting onto the other fitting on the lower unit. I previously took off a plastic screen where the motor takes in water to get to this fitting.

You will first need to determie the year of your motor. Look on the transom brackets (at the rear of the boat), to find the model number. Post that number and we will be able to pinpoint a year and motor model for you. I believe it was FR that supplied this nifty pic. You will then need to get a manual, or maybe someone on here will be able to help you with your shift rod length so that you can adjust it.

Does anyone out there have the setting for the shift rod adjustment on a 1987 25 hp Evinrude? The model # is E25TECUR

Thanks
