Just picked up a 77 Rude 25. Model 25702S
Looks like a runner to me, but am I wrong or shouldn't it have some kind of air breather on the carb? Is it OK to run it this way?

Think I see a CDI box on this so no points right? Those coils look fairly new too I'm thinking.

Yeah, silencer is missing. I suppose it is ok to run it that way.....IF it doesn't affect the rich/lean mixture. High speed mixture is fixed jet, not adjustable.

Yep, no points.

The silencer is important. Maybe not so much for the engine performance, but having it makes conversation on the boat a lot more pleasant

Does anybody know what years and HP ranges interchange? A similar Johnson should work I'm thinking. Pasting in pics of what think I need. Anybody got one laying around they'd part with?

On the top of the johnson evinrude forum there is a sticky that has boating salvage yards. Try and call some of them. They have a lot of good stuff.
It is not just the plastic housing. It should come with a couple of bolts and (very important) a round foam like washer that helps it fit onto the carburetor, Without that ring it will still be very noisy.

I looked at that once before and didn't see any near me. Guess I'll look it over again. Thanks for the tip.

that motor will run just fine without a silencer , some of them including the 35s never had one from the factory.

Good to know, but why bother when you can get most anything on ebay? Not a big fan of that site these days, but they have several of these parts. I'd just rather pay a little less if possible. Be cool to know what motors have the same part. Are 18s and 25s the same family?

1977 was the first year of the " big block " model 25 HP-----The 22 cube 18 / 20 / 25 was from 1957 to 1976 I believe.

Older models probably won't work? I see a few cheap OMC motors for sale locally, was trying to figure out if any of them would have the part I need.

That 40HP Johnson is an RD model and many parts are useable for other year RD's and Evinrudes. Have fun with those great old motors!

That is a 1960 or 61 model.----Not much if anything will fit on a 1977 model 25 HP, some nuts & bolts maybe.

I figured as much. Just how my luck seems to be running. Any idea what motors would have the silencer I need?

Try looking through the parts list on this web site. find the silencer. where does it mount? mine (older motor) has an aluminum disk with three machine screws that mounts on the lower engine cover Under the carburetor. Its purpose is to cushion the air coming into the cover, not filter it. It will not effect how your engine runs but how quiet it is.
