Evinrude 25 hp carb problem

My 95 25 hp Evinrude stopped running after about a 1/2 hour on the river. I checked the fuel pump and checked to make sure i was getting gas to the carb. I also squirted some gas into one of the cylinders ( I fired up but quit) so I know I'm getting spark. I think I may have to take apart the carb. I haven't touched a carb in years let alone one on an Evinrude. I have been told it's no big deal to rebuild. My question(s) are: Does anyone have another reason as to why the motor stopped? Is rebuilding a big deal? Mick

did it stop like you turn it off, or did it loose rpm and slowly die, sputter , spit ,cough. you say you know you have spark, did you test it on both cylinders, have you checked compression. pull the plugs and do a spark test, and compression. get back with results and history.

did you have good water flow out the tale tell?

Thanks for helping. The engine just jerked twice within a couple seconds. then it wouldn't start. I checked both cylinders. I finally got it going by draining the carb and shooting Evinrude carb cleaner into the drain hole and bell housing. Although It now runs, it runs only with full choke. Mick

Carb fulla junk if it will only run with the choke on. Pull the carb, take the float bowl off, spray carb cleaner in all passages, back together and try it....then we can take it from there

From the sounds of it you just need to clean the carbs. Fairly easy Job. Also if you want you could spend about 25 bucks and buy a new carb gasket kit.

It takes longer to take the things off then to clean them.. Soak them in some claener over night then blow them out. I would also soak the cylinders in Deep Creep at the same time. Never hurts.

Great advise. Life is good. I'm a happy boater after cleaning my carb. it runs like a top. Thanks everyone. Mick
