Evinrude 225 OceanPro VRO question/problem

Just bought an Aquasport 250CCP with this motor. Very hard starting. When and if you get it started it smokes, and I mean SMOKES... enough to make a pitmaster proud, for a good 15 minutes then clears up.
This is what I found. Strong spark all cylinders, compression 115 -120 across the board, choke circuit functioning OK, engine turns over strong but will not start, acts as if ignition is disabled. disconnected kill switch input to power pack and spray gasoline directly into the carbs, timing light showing ignition to all six plugs... Still a no go.
Pulled the plugs, they are literally bathed in oil. Further examination reveals that there is an apparent air leak between the fuel filter and the primer bulb. (fuel level in filter was low and bulb will not become "firm") Understanding that an air leak can result in the fuel side of the VRO losing prime which would then result in the VRO filling the carbs with pure oil this all seems to make sense. What puzzles me is that while repairing the fuel bulb / filter problem I discover that the entire fuel line and filter have "Mixed", very deep blue colored fuel in them. Previous owner swears no oil was ever added to the gas tank. Of course this mixture should occur at the VRO and the filter and fuel line should be pure gasoline. My question then is, is it possible for a defective VRO to allow oil to siphon (or be pumped) through the fuel side of the pump back into the supply line?
If so, is the problem usually on the fuel side (the rebuildable side!) of the VRO or is it on the oil side and I am going to have to replace the whole unit?
Suggestions are very much appreciated
Thanks,
Chris

Your question: My question then is, is it possible for a defective VRO to allow oil to siphon (or be pumped) through the fuel side of the pump back into the supply line?

Yes, absolutely. I ran into this scenario some years back. Actually I noticed the oil level in its tank jumping all over the place right after I took the rig into the shop... much gasoline in there.

The problem turned out to be (as suspected) a faulty VRO. Installed a new VRO, drained oil tank and lines. Refilled tank and primed = problem solved.

(Priming The VRO Pump)
(J. Reeves)

When hooking up or installing a VRO whether it is a new or original VRO pump, it must be primed in order to dispel any air that might be in the oil line.

Have the Oil line attached to the engine fitting BUT detached from the VRO. Add a piece of fuel hose if necessary to the oil line so that it can be aimed into some sort of container.

Pump the oil primer bulb, catching the oil flowing out of the line into the container until you are absolutely sure that you have rid the oil line of every bit of air that might have been trapped there.

Now, connect the oil line to the VRO and secure it. When the oil line is secured, apply pressure to the oil primer bulb ONE TIME only. That's it.

Could be your oil tank is not venting properly, building up pressure and causing this.

Re: Evinrude 225 OceanPro VRO question/problem

If you have an air leak into the suction side of the gas plumbing, the VRO will over oil, since the VRO thinks there is a lot more fuel going through than really is. Just another possibility, although it wouldn't self clear. I suspect oil is leaking through the pump at rest and filling the carb bowls. This will clear when the motor has run long enough to get the oil mix right in the carbs. The fix is a new pump.

Thanks Everyone. That confirms what I thought. Was wondering if a VRO fuel side rebuild kit was worth doing but now I am going to replace the entire unit. I am leaning towards the "leaking through the pump at rest" notion since it only happens for the first start of the day.

Replace the pump, clean the oil tank, replace filter in tank, bleed oil line, check alarm system. If you need shop help, go to Tice by the railroad tracks, hiway 82. Yamaha dealer, has Evinrude parts. Talk with Sandy parts, Geno for repair or info, he was OMC master tech. Need more help, DHadley this forum, just 30 miles North of you.
