Evinrude 225 ECM Replacement

I have an 2003 Evinrude 225HO Ficht that started acting up a few days ago. I took it to the shop and the ECM is shot. He gave me two options. One was to send it to DFI Technologies and have them fix it, or he has one that will work. It is an used ECM off an 200HP engine like mine. My question is will this work on my engine? I would assume that the 225 is a little different than the 200. He took it to the lake and he claimed it ran fine, I am just worried about long term.

Does anyone have any ideas if this ECM off the 200 will work on my 225?? Thanks in advance!

Send your orginial ECM to DFI. The coefeciants for the injectors on the 200 may not be the same as yours.

Re: Evinrude 225 ECM Replacement

Let me expand on what Boobie posted.
The only difference in a 200 and a 225 is in the ECM programming.
The bore/stroke/compression/pistons/injectors, all are the same between the two HP models.
The coefficients that Boobie posts about along with the ECM code add that extra 25HP.

Very importantly, you have a 225HO. If you go to a 200 EMM you will lose serious HP.
You will lose engine hours history, stored hard codes, and very important...the serial number will notmatch the engine ID tag.
Lots of reasons to reject the 200 EMM.

Also, as I recently encountered, the Evinrude/Bomb history of that motor will be corrupted. They will no longer support ANYTHING having to do with the motor, because some mechanic acting independently swapped in a "non supported" EMM.

It might come back to bite you, like it did for me.

Read my post regarding obtaining injector coefficients.

I appreciate the input. I am going to ship it off and get it rebuilt. I was afraid that it would hurt me in the long run.

Re: Evinrude 225 ECM Replacement

"Your ECM is shot"....OK..."shot " doesn't say too much. Please if you do send it to DFI, please get them to tell you EXACTLY what was wrong with it.
The failure, and the typical symptoms that the engine will exhibit when the EMM has such a defect.
They will do it if you ask.

Give you an example....I had an EMM I bought off EBay, with the absolute specific conditions and understanding that if it was bad, I could get my money back.
The EMM powered up just fine, cycled the fuel pump, just as it is supposed to, could read all parameters, able to look over the stored codes, it appeared to be just fine.
Then I went to start the engine. That EMM blew the 20 A fuse in the harness only when trying to crank the motor.
So, I got my money back, but we sent the EMM to DFI, and I wanted absolute verification of the failure/failure mode/symptoms.

They looked it over, and reported back that the EMM had a shorted output driver to one of the ignition coils that would draw excessive current only when the EMM was trying to generate spark.
They also said that the failure was a very common failure...so common that they knew what it was before actually diving into it.

Try to get that type of information from them, and post it back. I really dig reading about detailed stuff like that.

Thanks.
