So I've recently cleaned carbs with new gaskets, new water pump , new VRO pump kit, new fuel lines and new starter motor. Coils , plugs, CDis and wires tested good. Timing advance working. Compression tests 80 psi on all cylinders. The boat has not been used much in years.
The fuel hose ball is hard. Runs perfectly on land/muffs. In the dam it starts & idles, then may run for a short time in low revs and bogs down. Restart usually requires cold start lever but still bogs down.

Compression is a bit low. Don't know if it’s apples to oranges comparison, but my 1997 is # 97-100 all the way around. Could be the gauge.

What rpm is your idle set at?
Mine has not idled at spec (650 rpm) since new. @ 725 it will purr like a kitten all day

Have you tried a strong dose of cleaner products like ring free, power tune some like Seafoam some don't . Evinrude make a product called Carbon Guard etc....
try another meter with a short hose.

would hand pumping help it stay running ? ...could be fuel starvation problem if you need to restart it. did you change impeller in the last 3-5 years ?

1987 is a open deck motor with large cc chamber heads. 85-90 psi is normal at cranking for these models. The recirculation system suck on these older models so check the valves for stoppage/restriction. If hand pumping keeps it going crankcase compression is low

I have the 3wire VRO pump which I rebuilt with a new kit. I borrowed & installed a 4wire pump.
The boat now 'runs' in the dam, with a lot of low end coughing. Only runs well above 4000rpm.
Can this be reed valves?

Yes, the impeller/pump is new.

So with the idle & timing adjusted and another VRO pump, the motor seems to be good.

Factory VRO pumps are not cheap.----Also easy to diagnose and repair in my opinion.

I did try a repair kit with no success. I think the housing may be cracked. Luckily , found a good used pump.
