Hi All new to the website and hoping to get some help please,
I just bought a boat about 4 weeks ago when I bought it I started it on muffs and had good water from the telltale,
Once I got it home after a week I put the motor into a bucket of water and turned it on but no water from the telltale and the overheating alarm went off.
I’ve changed the water pump/impeller and the whole casing I bought a water pump kit, thermostat and gasket.
But still nothing from the telltale I have cleaned it, if I connect the house to the intake tube when I removed the lower end water came out of the telltale fine, Just a nite when I originally went to check the thermostat I found that the previous owner did not have a thermostat in there, so I bought a new one and installed it but I still get the overheating alarm. Any advice on what to check next?
it’s a project for my son and I he is 13yo and we can’t wait to go finishing any ideas would be great it’s an Evinrude 30hp outboard model he30elerm
Serial number G 03536550
94model
Also the last time I started it after changing everything I had steam coming from the tell take and 1 or 2 drops every 30seconds but then the alarm went off

In a test bucket the water level must be 6" or so ABOVE the pump !

I actually got a bigger bucket and filled it up more and it worked thank you so much, even our local boat shop said the muffs were enough, I guess I won’t be going to them again.

I just noticed I have oil coming from the lower end as in the photo any ideas?

If it smells like gas, it's unburned fuel from the leg. Get a 30 gal trash can, and run water about half way up the leg (or more). Keep the hose running. Need to build a motor stand to accept the "barrel" (good father/son project).

Doesn’t smell like fuel think it’s oil

thank you for the advice, good project gets my son off the PS4 and we can learn together

Could it be normal ?-----What I would do here.------Check and see if any water is getting into the gear case.-----Or if you are not sure then pressure test the gear case.------Or look on this forum ( and others ) that this question is asked almost every day.-----Oil that is mixed with the gas has to go somewhere.

Looks like we've got the same engine! I've always had great water flow from the "telltale" (have never heard that term before), but have had some intermittent issues with the alarm in the control box. If it helps, you can see how this forum has helped me with a few other conditions. Also, if there's anything I can do to help you troubleshoot (by sharing observations on my end, pictures, etc.), just contact me. I'd love to help (and learn more) on "our" engine.
