evinrude 1989 tach

I have a 200 hp 1998 evinrude outboard and the tach stays stuck on about 2000 rpms when moter is not running,could anybody help,thanks,seaslick

Does the tach reset itself to ZERO when you turn the key on? If so, remaining at some other position other than zero is normal for a tach when you turn the engine off. I am assuming the tach works correctly when the motor is running.
