Hi, this will be just the first in a string of neophyte questions on my mission to rebuild this engine. Your patience and help appreciated.

1) can I just drive the lower seal out of the exhaust housing with a screw driver from the other side or is there a better method or should this seal be kept ? Pic below, seems everyone says replace as a rule

2) the water tube is stuck pretty good and the grommet is melted, would you just heat this up and pull it downward or is it designed to be installed/removed from the top ? Better way ?

Removal of these things is not explained in my service manual for my outboard. (maybe I'm expecting too much !)

Thanks

Welcome to iboats

As for the shaft seal in photo 1, you should be able to use a large screwdriver & poke it in from the top, leveraging on one side & pry it out.

The water tubes usually need to be removed from the top as they have a slight lip inset in the hole & lay below the grommet.

Thanks for the response, got my crank case back from shop today, they were drilling out a broken bolt, filled the hole and tapped it. Now I noticed they left a little spot of weld in the cylinder.... boy this didn't make my night.

What do you think is the best approach for this, can this be repaired ?

knock the *** off and see what the damage is, a brass punch or something where you don't hurt the cylinder more. I bet its not that bad.

You are following my footsteps except it is a 1987 johnson 8. When completed it floods easily and refuses to start without alot of effort however when warm it purrs like a kitten. Watch the pickup timing it is sensitive. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Did it leave anything you can feel with your fingernail? It might need to be honed a tad

The spot from the weld came off totally clean, no ridge or anything I can feel :), so no need to do anything to the cylinder. The water tube came out from the top as advised (thanks) there is a flange on it so it wouldn't have came out from the bottom. The seal tapped out easily too.

Just checked the thermostat, glad I did it was in bad shape, that could have been the source of my overheating...
Figured out the photobucket thing

Just got a new piston, one of the pins that stops the ring from spinning seems a little low, anyone ever see that before in a new piston ?
I assume when the rings flex out a bit in the cylinder if the pin is not out far enough it would allow the ring to spin causing problems. It does stop the ring from spinning if I press the ring right in.

Anyway to check that it's doing it's job ?

I'm getting my parts organized here, I didn't exactly follow the text book procedure for this build. In fact probably did it exactly backwards. I took the engine apart 2 years ago, put all the parts in one box. Don't recommend you do it this way...now I'm trying to figure which bolts go where.

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I'm starting with the pistons, I guess that's logical. I've cleaned everything as good as I can get it. I put the rings on the pistons carefully this wasn't too hard. I practiced trying to get the piston in the cylinder with the old piston using zip ties on the pistons. First I tried zipping both at once, that didn't work too well for me I went to a one zip at a time method and that worked well. I oiled the cylinders and pistons with 2 cycle outboard oil first. I tried a hose clamp and found that hard to keep the rings from spinning to the wrong spot.

I tapped the cylinders in with the lower ring and zip tie in place, then put the top ring on, zipped tied it and then tapped it down further. Seems ok, maybe someone can confirm I've got these in correctly I think they are positioned correctly with the slanted side toward the exhaust.

Next I pulled the pistons down to where I could see the rings through the side holes, exhaust ports I guess. I pressed on the rings gently and they feel like there is some spring tension in them and not jammed. I think that's what the manual is suggesting it should feel like.

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

I think there is a problem with the new piston as mentioned above, when I spin new the piston to see if the rings are in the correct place the ring is moving around, the stop pin doesn't seem to be high enough and is allowing them to spin.....back to the parts counter to send this one back and order another I guess.

Long story short returned new piston, used old one and the rings didn't spin in it. I wanted to buy another new one but the parts guys said this is OEM blah blah blah didn't have a clue so I took my cash back.

I cleaned the crankshaft with this foam pad cut into strips, couldn't find anyone that even knew what crocus cloth was

installed the needle 90 needle bearings this afternoon, that wasn't easy.

Have to borrow another torque wrench the one I have won't go down to 66 in lbs for the connecting rod screws

Re: Evinrude 1985 8 Hp E8RC0B Rebuild

Anyone know the best way and when to put this snap ring in ? Do I just squeeze it in the crankshaft side and then fit down the cover gently ? am I missing something here ?

replies appreciated, thanks
