Evinrude 140 not starting

Got a pair of 1989 Evinrude 140's..the starboard motor will start and run for just a couple of seconds. Sounds like a fuel issue so I checked filters and even disconnected the fuel line coming out of the oil injection pump and seems to be flowing strong. The shop is backed up for several weeks and would like to get this going to do some fishing the week of the 4th..............any ideas? Thanks Don Bonner

bern's got you in a good direction because carb's need maintenance. Having said that, it's probably best to start at the very, very top. On both motors, do a compression test, spark test and then test the fuel system. Post your results and share anything that's been done to the motors recently, i.e. lower unit fluid changed, impellars replaced, new plugs..etc. etc. That way, folks can get you the advice that is applicable, not general. Those 'Rudes only need 3 things to run; compression, spark & fuel. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice.........I think I will start with cleaning the carbs, but a little more background on the motors, both motors were compression tested and all cylinders were between 128 and 130, I did change the lower gear fluids last fall.....put new spark plugs in the spring....here is a tid bit that may have some connection....both motors would not run properly,would bog down and even stall and was very hard to start...solution was to install a new fuel bulb to replace a defective one. The port motor started and runs correctly. the starboard motor continues to not want to run more than a few seconds and even hard to start for that short period.
