Working on this motor for a friend as I repair motorcycles. Is there a pilot jet on these carbs? I can get it running but won't idle down.

OK, found the s/n off the freeze plug. It is G4186558. I can't find the model # anywhere. Thanks for any help.

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

Those big boys are pretty complicated units.
I would need the model number to know what year to look for, same as you however, you can look it up on the internet.

Idle issues can be fuel pump, gummed carb(s), low compression, spark issues, etc. and again those big boys with multiple carbs and cylinders can be quite complicated as far as I know.

Decarbonize it by squirting some decarbonizer (Seafoam, OMC, Mercruiser whatever) down the throat of the carbs and follow the directions on the can. See if that helps any.
Otherwise sycronization and the above mentioned (fuel pump issues, carb issues, low compression, spark issues, etc.) can be quite a tough job for a backyard mechanic. Sorry, but I don't have a good direction for you. Good luck!!!!

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

Thanks Harry for the reply.....

I started pulling one carb off(looking for a pilot jet) and it was just the float bowl. I couldn't find a jet in there? Its acting like the idle/slow speed jet is gummed up. Really need a manual or parts fish or something. Runs on high RPM with the choke but take it off and it dies like its not getting fuel. If I can find out the year, i'll buy a manual.

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

Here's one of the best sites to find OB motor years,... that I've found anyway:

http://www.obparts.com/years/index.html

These guys are decent for parts as well if you can't find them locally.

Most of the reference is for model not serial number. The model number can be found on the area of the OB that clamps or bolts to the transom of the boat right on the flat part of the curve of the motor. Most manuals cover a pretty good stretch in years since most OB manufacturers made few changes between years especially OMC. Again, good luck!!

If the model number is not on the freeze plug, look on the transom bracket here for it, it could be possibly painted over though.

If the motor is earlier than 1980 these are the model numbers you will have to choose from. If it is 1980 to 1998 or later, it will look like E115TLCTA, which is for a 1983 Electric start TNT. Changes again from 99 to 01, then 02 and up. Good luck

Sorry you will have high and low speed jets on your carb which need to be cleaned thoroughally during rebuild. A special tool is needed to take them out, which you can make out of a screw driver and belt sander.

OK, here are some pics of what i'm dealing with. In the black plastic float assy. pic, is that the low speed jet? Has a 20 on it. I did find some #'s on the transom mount but not sure if thats what I should be looking for?? If I can get a year, I can buy a service manual to fix the POS! Thanks a bunch guys!!!

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

The model # should be on a small metal plate rivited to the transom bracket, it will say Model# and serial# on it, or very close to it.

The carbs are fairly easy to work on and if you've work on motorcycle carbs it's basically the same thing. Clean everything with carb cleaner, but don't soak the float bowls if they're plastic, blow air through each passage way.

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

That looks like it is one of the V4 Optical ignition engines, I had a 90 which is the same engine. I should think that engine is around 1996 at a guess.

You can easily tell if this is the optical version by removing the top engine cover to expose the flywheel there should be an electronic sensor that then reads the gaps on the centre wheel this is the optical bit.

This engine is set up in such a way that you actually set the idle speed by adjusting the timing and not by adjusting the carbs

In order to set up idle and hi speed timing you must use a special tool called the optical ignition tester which connects to the optical sensor on top of the engine. The carbs are set up at the factory and should not need to be touched for the life of the engine. You may of course need to clean them as already suggested. You cannot use a normal timing light to set up this engine.

You really need to check out one of the work shop manuals as they are very useful on how to set up these engines, I have the clymer version it will also go through setting the carb linkages as well.

You can buy an aftermaket optical tester from CDI for about $250 or you can find a dealer that can set it up for you.

I would not touch any carb settings until you have reset all the timing settings.

Chris

NB before doing any of the above you must use a piston stop tool to ensure the timing pointer is set correctly.

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

A couple of other things about this engine that you need to know.

There is only one sparkplug that can be used in this engine it is the Champion QL78YC any other spark plug used will cause running problems. The plugs should all be gapped at .030

Chris, your the man!

Theres a cover on the coils and it says something about the optical ignition 2000 or something like that. What clymer manual do you have(so I can buy it!)? Does it show where the idle jets are? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Evinrude 115 won't idle?

Yep thats the one then

This is the manual I had you can find it on Clymers WebSite.

Here is a link to the optical ignition setting tool from CDI..... http://www.marineengine.com/parts/part_details.php?pnum=CDI511-4017
Much better if you can borrow one as once set you probably wont need to touch it again.
