Engine not winterized, suspect engine froze up. What is the easiest way to hydrostatically test the engine block for possible crack?

A quick question. Was the motor stored vertical. If it was, there is no way the block could have froze up. Even if you left the motor tilted when you took it out of the water, there would not be any water in the block, because it all drains out when you shut it down. You could or might have damage in the lower unit if the motor was stored tilted and the water was not drained out of the exhaust and water pump areas.

I'd do a compression check and go for it. :)

I really don't think the block is damaged from freezing. BUT it sounds like you might have gotten some moisture into the cylinders during the storage period. You have to be very careful when dealing with this kind of problem. First out the pistons are not made out of steel so pounding on the tops of them is out of the question.

You are on the right track by getting oil on the tops of the pistons. I have had some luck by rocking the fly wheel back and forth after the oil soaks for a while. I have also heard of guys useing a little transmission fluid, but you have to use care in what you use and how much.

Remember to much force will break things quickly with these motors. I think your talking seaze problem here. I really think the rings may have rusted a little to the cylinder walls. Let's get her free first then take the next step. ;)

Have you tried to crank the engine with the
spark plugs out. The best way is with a starter button connected to the positive from
the battery, and the brown wire at the starter solonoid. The engine could have more fuel in it than the piston can compress

Drop the lower unit and try turning it over by hand. It will need an impeller anyway if it has been sitting in one spot for a long period. The pump housing is concentric, and the rubber impeller will have "formed" to the shape of the pump housing. It will (if ran), werk fine for a short time, and then fall appart. And if it has frozen-up in the gear train, it will lock the powerhead up.

12 Footer is dead on on this one. If the gearcase is seized ,the engine can't turn ,so rule that out first.Drop the gearcase.
