I have a shifting issue with my outboard.... The other day I changed the oil in the lower end gear box. I proceeded to the lake and ran the boat for an hour or two without problems. I was slowing down and the engine died on me. I went to shift to neutral before re starting the engine. The engine wouldn't shift out of gear. I finally got it in to neutral and was able to start the engine. It seems that the lower end is having shifting issues. I pulled the drain plud on the lower end and found a bunch of metal shavings. I started to take the lower end off , but can't seem to be able to get the unit to seperate buta half of an inch. The diagram shows the parts but i don't see what is holding it from seperating? Anty help would be appreciated.

Did you disconnect the shift rod at the top?

I've never done it but I see this almost every day here.

If you found metal shaving I think you have more than a shifting issues, were there any shavings when you changed the oil the first time?

What oil did you use when you changed it?

Follow the shift linkage on the motor, you may find a small bolt under the carbs that you need to remove, never worked on one of those motors.

The way a lower works is the drive shaft comes straight down and has a pinion gear on it, forward and reverse are always in contact with that pinion and a clutch dog slides back and forth to engage the gear so if the motor is running the gears are turning, if you get a chunk of metal in between those gears it will sometimes stall the engine.

I hate to tell you but you are looking at new lower unit, there really isn't anything you can fix in there as the tolerances are so tight it really needs to be done professionally.

I have rebuilt several lowers and none of them lasted very long because I don't have the tools to get the tolerances right.

Also, you can pull the lower apart without removing it, at least so far as to see what broke but I am sure none of the gears are usable anymore seeing as the have been chewing on hardened gear metal.
