I recently grabbed a 10HP evinrude thinking it was a great purchase. The PO mentioned that it has a skeg issue - a crack and he was willing to give the motor at a good price which I accepted. He mentioned that he ran the motor and had mended the crack but it has started to flow again so he bought another motor.

I have pictures to share but am unable to load them due some issue and requesting site admin to assist please. I am based in Calgary and looking to repair or replace the skeg. I did order a used skeg from the US but not sure if its a straight forward job to replace or ill need a service company to do it for me. Please guide if possible. Pics to be loaded as soon as admin approves.

The upper and lower half of the gearcase are machined as a unit .----Considered to be one piece.----You may get lucky just replacing the bottom part.-----Was it cracked due to water freezing ?-----Take it apart to inspect gears and bushing above pinion gear.----This will be costly if you need a shop to help you.

There was no 10 HP in 64, that was the yr the 9 1/2 was introduced. Your 10 was made between 1951 and 1963

One of my OMC Prop Charts shows a 10HP in 51, using the same Prop #s as the 56-63s

Johnson marketed a 10 in 49----Evinrude started that in 56 with a 10 HP.-----Not all models were the same between the 2 divisions in the early years.-----Up to 57 the 10 HP used the 18 HP gearcase.

How do I repair the skeg? It's a crack. No holes. Lol someone suggested rubbing a soap bar into it and if no oil is oozing then putting a butyl rubber tape. I don't want to spoil it any further. From the condition, seems previous owner has used some sort of epoxy or jb water weld. Total newbie here to this process. I am also looking at someone who does aluminium welding to see if they can fill the crack. Still unable to post any pics.
