Evin. 8hp pull cord stuck! URGENT!

late 90's evinrude 8 hp for a small inflatable boat type deal. test ran the engine...ran fine and great, idled a little low so i took off the engine cover and turned the idle up with one screw, 5 min job...and i was done. went to test run it again...pull cord is stuck in place, wont pull out even though i had just done it a few times 5 minutes before...its a friends engine, i feel bad and in a rush...HELP!!

There is a mechanical interlock that prevents starting (pulling the cord) if the throttle is too far open.
Seems like the adjustment you made put you over the top.
Back off that idle-adjustment screw to where you found it and you should be OK.

I hate to ask...but is the motor in neutral??

okay good deal, im gonna go try now...thanks for the quick reply...ill keep updatin-theres no neutral or forward or anything, just constantly running-if you think there is...where would it be located-im used to 55;s where its on the steer handle but theres nothing there....

Look for a lever on the left side just below the removable hood.

Look for a lever on the left side just below the removable hood.

He got it running to test it, and presumably did not shift out of Neutral or would know where the shifter was.

I do not know all the models of evinrude...but a '90s 8 HP should have a gear case...wouldn't you think? 8 HP is a lot of motor to not have a neutral!

I have a 91 Evinrude 8HP.
Definitely has a shift lever, but on the right hand (starboard) side.

I guess that depends on which way you're looking, but I usually start my motors looking aft and that would put starboard to the left!

Point is, the guy has a shiftable gearcase and doesn't know it. It's very difficult to pull the cord while it is in gear!
