Evenrude fuel starvation

Hi,
I have a 1977 6hp Evenrude that seems to suffer from fuel starvation. I re-kitted the fuel pump which made no difference. I tried removing the fuel hose from the outlet with the motor running and unless the tank is raised above the motor only a dribble of fuel comes out. When the tank is raised it is not a problem. I also tried connecting the tank hose directly to the pump inlet to eliminate any possibility of sucking air.
I would appreciate any assistance.

G'day, Murray.

What symptoms lead you to believe you have fuel starvation?

Have you cleaned your tank and confirmed that there is no blockage to the pickup or vent? How about the primer bulb?

Have you cleaned the carb and confirmed that the jets and other passages are clear?

Let us know.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Evenrude fuel starvation

The symptoms were the motor would run for a while then lose power and cut out.
I found that if I squeezed the bulb quickly enough it would then pick up and run fine again for a while.

I have a new tank and fuel line including the bulb.

I believe the problem to be in the pump as there is only a dribble of fuel coming out of the pump when the tank is lower than the motor.

Is it common for the valve body in the fuel pump to give trouble as this is the only part of the pump that has not been touched.

Thanks for the help

Murry'
It's my opinion that you still have a bad fuel pump, only a trickle won't do it. Fuel pumps arn't that expensive where I'm at, I think that I would try a new one.
Just my 2 cents worth

Re: Evenrude fuel starvation

Poor fuel delivery problems can be caused by many things:
>tee into the suction side of the pump (at the pump) with a vacuum pressure gauge(cheap) and a piece of clear hose inline with the main fuel line. Start engine and observe vacuum. If above 3"HG, suspect a restriction between the pump and the fuel in tank(vent/cap plugged, hose kinked, hose plugged, anti-spill/syphon valve) Any bubbles in the clear line suggest air leaks in the suction side.

>reinstall all connections in the suction side and tee in on the pressure side of the pump. Start engine. Pressure should be 1-3psi pending on model. If pressure is low, the pump diaphram, valves, and vacuum supplied by motor are in question. Remove the pump and check the crankcase port to engine for blockage. If its clear, the problem is in the pump.
If pressure was normal, but still no fuel to carb, check the inline filter(if any)

:)
