evenrude foot trouble

hey there i got a 35 evenrude ouyboard not sure what year but the gears are gone in the foot and i cant get the lowwer part of the leg apart there is no plate on the leg to let go the shaft and the leg only comes apart around 1 inch.what do i do to get this prob.fixed

You didn't give a year model so I'm only guessing. Pull the water intake screens off bothe sides of the lower unit. You might see a shaft with 2 nuts locking it together. Unscrew the lock nuts and slide the top opne up. You will now see a nylon coupling. Spread the split on that coupling and remove it, remove the upper nut. . WaaLaa. your lower unit will come off.
