Evenrude Big Twin Project

I had a guy give me a Evinrude Big Twin. I have no idea where to start on the project. This is what I know. I found some numbers on it,#2003 and #16959. The motor has spark but I can't get an acurate comprision test on it because it is so hard to pull. I got it to fire with a shot of starting fluid, the gears work and it seems somewhat machanicly sound. That is all I have found out about it. Is there anybody that can tell me more information on this motor?

On the motor mounting bracket there should be some numbers with letters. Like for instance my 1961 Johnson 40 H.P. is model RDS-23.<br /><br />Look for the model number and then we can give you a hand. It might be somewhere on the block, but I do not know where to look on the block. <br /><br />Does it have a starter on it? Usually the older big twins are harder to pull, better to hook up a battery and let the starter do the work.<br /><br />Also if it has not been run in a while, you may want to take out the spark plugs and put in some pre-mix, or fogging oil. manually turn the flywheel in the proper direction and let it stand overnight to let the oil settle and lubricate the cylinders.

and don't use starting fluid ever again. It has no oil in it, and, can wash the oil off the bearings and cylinder walls, causeing high wear.... It is better to squirt some premix (you really need to find out the year, so that you can use the correct fuel/oil ratio) down the throat of the carb with a spray bottle.<br /><br />I would suggest that you also replace the impeller in the water pump, and rebuild the carb.

The later big twins (35 hp) had a decompression mechanism that actuated when the recoil starter was pulled. It relieved some of the compression to aid in cranking.

Yeah I have a 40 H.P. with that decompression mechanism that is actuated with the pull of the recoil starter. I have to buy a new recoil starter because mine did not come with one.<br /><br /> I have a manual for this motor so any questions I can try and help you with.

What would the value of this motor be. Is it worth putting a couple of hundred dollars into? I don't really need a new motor but I was hoping to get it running sell it and make some money. any ideas on the value? It has everything to be a complete motor in about a 7/10 condition.

Usually nothing special, just whatever a good running 25hp or 30hp sells for in your area. There's no antique value as there are still plenty in regular service.<br /><br />But who knows, if you find the right buyer that is willing to spend some money for nostalgia's sake you might do just fine.<br /><br />Approximate fixup part costs:<br /><br />Ignition - $100<br />Water pump - $20-$50<br />Carburetor - $25<br />Manual - $25-$50 (depending on which one you buy)
