Epoxy is epoxy ain't it? Hobbie shop epoxy questions.

I've had this 1:1 epoxy in my parts box for at least 7 years now. Bought it at the local hobby shop and, as you can see, I haven't used much of it.

I believe this is 5 to 10 minute harden type.

Can I use this up to fill in screw holes in the topside of my boat? Then sand and paint over with no worries of it popping out?

The holes will be covered with Batboat fins and will probably never be exposed to UV light or water much.

Is epoxy all the same around or is there a different chemicle formulation for marine use?

I have no use for this at all in the foreseeable future. A few months ago I glued something together and one of the bottles seems to have started to gel slightly.

We used to use that stuff back when we were building RC airplanes. It may be ok but why risk it. Go get some new stuff. They do make different grades of epoxy, but any epoxy is going to pop out if you dont prep the holes a little. You may want to even use cloth on holes larger than 3/32 in diameter. I would be concerned about the age of the stuff.

The 5 minute epoxy isn't good at all,
but the 4 hr Petit hobbypoxy is very good.

Probably it's the resin (the colorless one) that's crystallizing. Set that bottle in a pan of hot water (water heated and removed from the stove) for a few minutes and see if it clears up. If so, make up a small batch and test it.

For some small topside screw-hole fill, I wouldn't worry about age as long as it will harden.

Are you planning on mixing some filler into it?

Hi. ok.

There are many, many topside holes to fill. LOL.

As for updates, if the weather is good tomorrow the upside down hull gets its first two coats of Interlux InterProtect 2000E/2001E Priming Epoxy.

Little bit more sanding is needed on the topside then I fix the splashwell. After that repair is set I rejoin the topside together.

A few hours ago I filled the last holes in the stern. I used Watertite filler on the hull but ran out so I used epoxy peanut butter today. Man, I had no idea epoxy takes so long to harden, unlike polyester resin. But I just went outside in the dark to check it out and that stuff is solid!!
