I am looking to get an EPIRB for boating on the St Lawerence and Lake Ontario on the suggestion of a few people I know as well as reading online they are useful for open water - 10 miles or more offshore. I am located on the Canadian side and mainly looking on amazon.ca for options. The ones I found that seemed reasonable are below but I would like some opinions on them and others that might be better.

ACR PBL 425 - $515 CAD
ACP Reslink 400 - $490 CAD

PLB's and EPIRB's use satellite communication so your distance from land makes no difference. In fact some hikers/campers use a PLB due to it's small size. That's what I have and take with me whenever I fish on any boat.

This is what we use down here, we are required by law to have one if we go out more than 2nm offshore.20230403_171049.jpg

All class D VHF radios have DSC functionality.

Going the radio route is a lot cheaper and provides better overall functionality.

The idea is to be rescued by a your fellow boaters (first responders) prior to going to the bottom of the sea.
He’s boating in a populated area.

Would you rather have the ability to continually broadcast your boat name and position to every boat within range at the slightest hint of problem or wait the 2+ hours for the Coast Guard to come looking for you?

What’s the life expectancy the life expectancy of someone in 12- 15 degree water?
