Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Just had the same thing happen to me, maybe 2-3 mos ago, all the sudden couldnt pee, went to ER, they put in catheter for 5 days and started me on antibiotics - immed relief from catheter, 550 mg in there. After a few days of hell in guts w/ antibiotics, they said i could stop takin them, AND pulled out my own catheter while on phone w/ doc - wow that was unusual, stung maybe just a bit but not bad. 15 mins later peeing like a tall horse on a flat rock. My prostate i think was enlarged, but takin 2 mg terazosin(one tab) at night, zero issues since, the uroligist says a prostatits attack, had my wonderful small fingered Chinese, cool lady doc do the figer test last week, all fine, didnt hurt and 10 seconds - ALL guys 40-50's should do this once a year if your doc says so, was funny, I mentioned to her after, "I really dislike this test" and she quietly remarked "you're supposed to", LMAO! I also at same time had an internal hemmroid (not fun and scary, until docs explained to me), not serious - but just am getting over again - had a complete kidney, bladder etc ultrasound yesterday cuz I've never had that test, doc said "why not, you've never had one" so we'll see what's next , I beleive the antibiotics kicked off a few issues, have had bad reactions to them forever, takes weeks w/ probiotic tabs and good yogurt to get back to normal. Sucks gettin old!!! (I'm 47). I've also had IBS kinda forever (15 yrs) so we'll see what can help me out with all, buttttt do what your doc says ASAP! Keep us posted, I guess quite a few of us have these types of issues. Oh i also did urinalysis, no blood in it( a good thing) but some bacteria - maybe a UTI (urinary track infection from catheter??) Good Luck!! Heinz

There are 2 things men cannot ignore and no, your wife isn't one of them.

Get your prostate examined.

If you are over 50, AND I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, get a colonoscopy. The work up is a little discomforting, the procedure is painless...and you are encouraged to to fart afterwards. Can't beat that!

Seriously, both procedure are so so so simply and will save your life.

What most men (and women) don't understand is a doctor looks at things from a clinical viewpoint. We are embarrassed or nervous to talk about body functions, but to them it is like us talking about fishing, except we are usually lying and they are not.

It probably wasn't a colonoscopy. They put you out for that.

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy. My FP says the annual fecal tests are enough but a GI doc I know says the coloscopy is the way to go to be sure.

A friend of mine had colon cancer at 44. He survived and would not have if he hadn't had the colonoscopy done.

"the pressure hurt"

You didn't have a colonoscopy.

"They put you out for that."

Boy! Do they!

"annual fecal tests are enough"

No they are not. Polyps are not going to show in a fecal test and that is what will kill you. Totally painless, no warning, bang you're dead.

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

I know this is just about an enlarged prostate, but my dad had prostate cancer, and I am over 40, so I get checked regularly. The last time was a month ago, and my doc (a pretty cool guy), said... "Awe, sorry bud, but it's that time again..."

Now it's time for the annual bloodwork to back up the other check. No pun intended.

Guys this is all sooo important! And I'm guessing, just about all of us is a bit secretive/embarassed, etc about the annual "finger test", I know I hesitated w/ my doc, and she did promise "no more than 10 seconds" as well as publicizing it here - perhaps we need a medical forum???

:confused::confused:

I've had two and not been "put out" for either....nobody I know that has had a colonoscopy has been either.
You must be confusing this with some other procedure....this one is no big deal.

The "prep" is literally a PIA though....:) ;)

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Sure you are not talking about a sigmoidoscopy?

edit: now I am reading that there are colonoscopys done without sedation. It does sound like sedation is the norm though.

I heard the prep is the worst part because you can't go anywhere. Well I take that back. "Going" is the big problem with the prep!

Not sure why the finger test is a big deal! Especially if she kisses you first!

Nope....definitely colonoscopy.
I'm on a 5 year redo....had it done just last October The difference in 5 years was remarkable. There are clinics here now that only do this procedure, and it is a piece of cake. Equipment is light years ahead in just the 5 years....and they have a high def flat screen monitor that you can watch if you want.
Next time (in another 5 years) they'll probably offer you a DVD for a small extra cost.....:D

I don't think you have to be "put out" for a colonoscopy, but they normally do, from a comfort standpoint. I was given the choice and it was "out".

I'd get a colonoscopy, before getting a tooth drilled, any day. It a big non-issue, from a prodecure standpoint, IMO.

Get one!

I would think by the time a fecal test is positive, there may already be big problems.

My colonoscopy found polyps, that were removed on the spot. They can form into cancer, I was told.

Going in again this year.

Getting the finger too.
