Speaking of colonoscopies, has anyone seen the commercial with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. You can win a free trip to New York for a free colonoscopy.

My Dr. didn't kiss me but she was gentile, being my first time and all. 13 biopsy's, my prostate is enlarged, but no cancer.

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Here's a head up for ya.

All this talking got me thinking. My regular doctor's appt was scheduled and I wasn't expecting anything out of the ordinary. Granted, over the past several months I have been very tired, but there have been a lot of things going on in my life. Everything was good with the visit, blood pressure, heart, etc., As we were wrapping up I mentioned the tiredness and the "funk" I was feeling; I was just not myself lately. He said, let's do some blood work, and I would like for you to see a Urologist. Got the blood work back and it was within reason and indicated the PSA (prostate) was good. The Urologist wanted additional blood work and a physical prostate check-no flowers. Thankfully, the prostate was in good shape.

I went back to the Urologist today for blood work result thinking he could put me on something to perk me up. HAHA...that would have been nice. Apparently (although normal blood work says I am normal) there are a bunch of other things a Urologist looks at. Long story short, prostate is perfect, the pituitary is questionable item. All those blood levels were all out a whack so now I go see an Endocrinologist to have the pituitary checked.

So I guess the moral of the story is...get to your doctor regularly, get your check ups-prostate, colon, etc., and tell you doctor of even the slightest changes in mood, activity, sleep patterns, food, exercise, aches and pains. He/she is the professional and they can save your life.

One last thing...open you mouth and talk...nothing is embarrassing to a doctor except maybe stupidity.

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble down there down under Kiwi Phil.

I just went and had blood drawn this morning for several over the age of 40 tests and come home to read this. I usually don't read every post in a two page thread...I did this one though.

I thought it was out of the ordinary for a simple A1C to turn into 7 vials of blood and a urine sample..Now I'm worried..."Thanks guys"

I am glad I'm not a hypochondriac (probably the polar opposite of one). I hate to admit it when I'm sick or that I'm getting older and I wasn't gifted with the best genes, thanks Mom and Dad. I have lived through everything that has afflicted me so far and hope to endure for a long time.

BUTT (sorry couldn't resist) I am going to have a talk with my Doc after reading this. Since I'm 45 and haven't gotten the finger yet.
I was told by a neurologist my issues derive from a severe trauma I had a few years ago and that there were nerves damaged in my spine that control bowl and bladder functions and that it has scar tissue on it. I can sit for hours or drive for hours without the need to go but the minute I stand up I have to hit the head. If I am standing I have to relieve myself every 20 minutes or so.:(
And when I gotta go, I GOTTA GO!!
Best of luck Phil, Hope everything comes out alright for ya.

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

The secret here is the runner's mantra; "listen to your body". Never ignore pain, it's your body's way of saying "enough!" If something isn't working right for any period more than a few days, talk to your doctor. I don't mean be a hypochondriac. But don't ignore what you body is telling you.

I was a runner most of my life. Started when I was 15 or 16. I am 67. About 6 years ago I started having pain in my toes and knees but it was more of a burning sensation than muscular or bone pain. Stupidly I ignored it for about a year (run through the pain mentality) Fortunately my wife gave me a kick in the pants and got me to go to my doctor who sent me to a neurologists. Significant nerve damage. One of the first thing he said was stop running. Damn that was hard to do. It's an addiction. Anyway I will probably have to live with this pain in my knees and feet the rest of my life. If I had listened to my body I would have done something about it about a year earlier and it would have healed itself.

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

I understand what you mean Pete, I have been through a quite a bit(most people don't want to get too close for fear of collateral damage:facepalm:). If I went to the doctor for every little thing, they would be able to retire very early:eek:.

I do try to take care of the important things like my diabetes,

But I have had 3 surgeries to put a leg back together, 3 to fix my back from an accident and 28 verified by x ray breaks, the others like fingers and toes I tape to a tongue depressor and hope for the best. lets not forget the hunting accidents( bird shot isn't that bad) or being in the wrong place at the wrong time to catch a 9mm in the arm or the hundreds of stitches

I now have a couple of those neat staplers in a sterile pack for the first aid kit.
I have 10 screws 2 rods and a plate in my back and several more from the waist down, no I do not fly anymore it takes too long to get through security.

But if I did I could I could just have the Doc consult with the TSA Agent at the airport......Wait a minute we may be on to something here....complimentary prostate exam with air travel Hmmmmm.

On a lighter note, I got a chuckle out of what the background search engine posted as "Similar threads" at the bottom of the page....:D

On another lighter note, my Dr is also gentile(non Jewish). The only reason I know that is he went to Catholic school with me!

What on earth is a sparkplug boar? Some sort of wild animal that only has to do 2 strokes?

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Update.
Well, I was discharged from the hospital yesterday after having had a TURP (re-bore) on Monday (4 days back).
It was a different experience, but at the moment the results are 'brilliant'. Hope they stay that way.
So far it is an experience I wouldn't want to repeat, BUT, in reality, it is probably little different to recovering from other surgery. Difficult!.

As I lay in bed after theatre I thought of all you blokes and how many of you would venture down this path.
If anyone wants to know what happens etc, let me know. I have a bit of time on my hands at the moment and the memories are still very fresh in my mind.

Of course, the next thing I am waiting for are the results of the biopsy, but to be honest I am ignoring that side. What happens will happen.

The public hospital system here had a long waiting list, and I have no insurance, so I went in as a 'paying patient', and that was a bit of a pleasant surprise.

Anyway, that's my news.

Cheers
Phillip

Re: Enlarged Prostate - mens health issue.

Final up-date.
A few messages, the 1st to Tim. Your friend is not wrong. I reckon I could p over a fence too now. Now I actually have to take careful aim. I havn't been this good in probably 20yrs.

The 2nd to JB. You were sort of right JB. It is something I would prefer not to repeat, but life is a whole lot better than it was before.
Recovery has been slow, but a guy at the boat club told me he had his postrate removed due to cancer (48 yo) and next to him in hospital was a guy who during recovery from a TURP had a major blood clot blockage. From that point on I did exactly as told. Now I can guess what they have that 'bulb' om the cathater - it's a @#$%^& pump!!

Specialist gave me the all clear yeaterday.
Still not 100% comfortable but that's ok.
Got the needle in the spine for anethsetic (sp!) and that has left me with a numb thigh, but it is slowly getting smaller in area.
My biopsy came back negative-clear, but I am still up for the annual PSA etc.

So all is good with this problem and I am back on the job.

Cheers
Phillip
