I've just brought a use motor and I was told that the carb's needed to be cleaned because it was sitting to long. I fire it up, and it runs ok. My question is if I let it run with fresh gas, will that clean the carb's without me braking down the motor. Or can I buy some carb cleaner and mix it in with the gas would that help.

Re: Engine

Sorry, but no. The only way to get them clean is to remove them and do it properly, any other way will not solve your problem. The bathing cans are handy to soak them in overnight. Dont forget the orifices and jets. Do you have a manual to guide you? That is not to say that you should not run a fuel additive as well. I personally run either BRP's Carbon Guard or Seafoam mixed in with my fuel/oil.

Re: Engine

I guess if it is running great, why would the carbs need cleaning unless you don't have else to do. Add Seafoam to your gas and run it. That in itself will help things out, especially if they are not that bad in the first place. I guess I am one of those folks who has the belief that if it anit broke, why fix it.

Re: Engine

I was gonna say the exact same thing as gss. If it's working at all rpm's, I'd leave it... It'd be more important to change the impeller on a new-to-you engine.

Btw, what engine and model # is it?

Re: Engine

I guess it depends on what he means by "fires it up".

May idle fine in the driveway on muffs, but get her on the water at WOT....

Highly unlikely a previous owner would give negative feedback on something he is selling unless it truly needs it. Or he is just a poor salesman, :)

I personally clean out the carbs, service the water pump and t stats, change lu oil and inspect plugs on any new outboard to me, no matter what the PO tells me he did or did not do. I also hate doing chores around the house though, lol

Re: Engine

The former owner is trying to tell you something. The thin parts of the fuel evaporate over a short period of time, leaving the gel residue in the bottom of the carb bowl. Very possible yours has this condition if the engine sat for a year. This gel can clog the jets, causing a lean condition. Personally, I would disassemble and clean them before running the boat in the water.

Re: Engine

i'm with high trim, and also ezeke.

running in the driveway mainly on your idle circuit and with no load on the motor doesnt tell you much.

the real test is to put it under load and see how she does.
if the motor is new to you, and installed it on your boat it might be hard to tell if its running as it should.
you should be able to run at at the upper rpm range with a normal load in your boat.

if you cant run it at the upper rpm range there could be a few things going on.

- dirty carbs
- wrong prop
- timing/ignition
- compression low

so i would defenatly run the motor first to test it what it does. verify there is a problem.

then if you find a problem check the simple things first.

hitting the choke/primer when the motor is boging down will introduce more fuel into the motor and the motor will pick up if it was running lean deu to dirty carbs.

tell us what motor it is and what boat it is and what prop you have,

do a simple compression test to see if you have good compression.

check the timing for maximum advance.

if this all is ok your motor is good to go.

oh yea defenatly put a new impeller in and change the tstat, Cheap insurance.

hope this will get you in the right direction
