Engine will not continue to run.

OMC with 3.8 ltr. eng. starts but will not hold steady rpm and will eventualy stop running. Suspected fuel but connected a new and clean fuel pick up to the fuel pump intake from a outside fuel can.

Fuel is being picked up and pump is mecanical so I think the fuel supply is getting to the carb. Can start the engine but problem continues even with carb cleaner added to the fuel supply. Is it time for a new carb or am I missing something?

Possible fuel starvation from clogged vent? If air can't enter the tank as fuel is pumped out, the vacuum created can impair fuel from flowing easily to the carbureator. It may be a long shot, but at least it's an easy check.

He swapped to an external fuel source, so nope.

How long does it run? If it dies right away (cold) then I'd definitely say something is going wrong in the carb, like a stuck float flooding the motor.

If it warms up then dies look into ignition system for failing components which are heat soaking.

Jets are clogged? the strainer in the carburetor? Or the set screw that holds the throttle open needs a little turn? How about the idle needle valves?

How bout checking your fuel filters?

I had similar problems with an aq260a. Ran good at speed, but at idle it would die after a couple minutes. This was after changing inline filter, canister filter, cleaning carb and rebuild kit. It wasn't until i replaced the points, set the dwell, changed condensor and retimed the engine that it finally started to run really good.
